We wanted to take a look at where teachers in New Jersey make the lowest average salary, so we dove into Department of Education stats to find the districts that pay teachers the least.

We limited the list to public school districts with more than 400 students, classified as “C” through “H” districts. We found that teachers in 682-student district of Milltown are the lowest-paid, with an average salary of slightly more than $45,000, about half of what the average teacher earns in the highest-paid district (but that’s a topic for another day).

Is that the starting salary for the teachers, or the average in the district?

That's the average. Typically staring salary for a public school teacher in the state of NJ is in the high 30Ks to mid-40Ks, so this data may indicate that these school districts have a relatively young, untenured staff. Also, this may be indicative of either administrative policies that rely on keeping cost down by utilizing and recruiting fairly young, less seasoned teachers who stay at schools for 3 years or less, or dissatisfaction amongst the school staff that requires constant recruitment of younger teachers as the more seasoned teachers move towards new, perhaps more secure, positions.
