A Little Background on Auto Insurance and Claims

I'm always fascinated to see the commercials on TV when it comes to NJ auto insurance by direct writers.

I’m always fascinated to see the commercials on the television when it comes to New Jersey auto insurance by the direct writers. “Our company can save you more money than this other company or 15 min. could save you 15% on your auto insurance.

Yet none of them ever discuss that they have representatives who are willing to talk about overall insurance needs of the customer in our litigious society.

Couple of years ago an auto insurance company (owned by Berkshire Hathaway: hint-hint) was successfully sued on a class-action case because their website would not show higher limits under auto insurance for medical coverage. Many people not knowing what they were buying purchased a minimum amount of medical insurance as part of their auto policy and later found out after a claim that they had very little coverage to pay for their medical bills. I guess telephone operator #854 was not available to explain the coverage.

Case in point: two weeks ago one of our sons traveling on a main highway, was caught in bumper to bumper traffic. While in the process of slowing down, he was hit from behind by the vehicle to his rear at which point the vehicle behind the other driver hit the vehicle in the middle who hit our son a second time. Our son’s vehicle was thrust forward and turned 180° whereby he was facing oncoming traffic and was hit a third time. Luckily, he received no injuries but the driver who hit him was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

Less than seven days later our son received a letter from an attorney indicating that the driver behind him was filing a lawsuit for the pain and suffering the other driver incurred. Really? A week later and you’re filing a lawsuit? Needless to say Mom and Dad Hauswirth got a phone call asking “what this is and what we do I with it, should he have done anything different?” I wonder if #1-800 insurance company would be able to know what to say to a person like that? I also wonder if any of those telephone representatives even have an insurance license.
