POLL: Woman Denied '8THEIST' License Plate, Sues New Jersey

Woman claims the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission denied her First Amendment rights. What do you think?

The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission is attracting a lot of attention this weekend, but it’s not because of long waiting lines or embarrassing driver’s license photos.

According to an Associated Press report, a New Jersey woman filed suit Thursday, claiming that she was denied a vanity license plate saying she’s an atheist.

Shannon Morgan, of Maurice River Township, filed a federal lawsuit against the MVC claiming that the Commission’s website rejected a plate she submitted that read ‘8THEIST,’ the report said. In her suit, Morgan claims the rejection violates her First Amendment rights, it said.

According to the report – which has run on multiple media outlets including time.com – Morgan claims she first tried to get a plate saying ‘BAPTIST’ approved on the site as a test, and was approved.

The NJMVC did not return AP calls for comments, but was closed Friday, the report said.

So, Patch wants to know – what do you think about the vanity plate? Who should win the lawsuit? Vote in the Patch poll above and let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

Yet another well developed field of scholarship you seem ignorant of, yet fully willing to comment upon. Amazing, really. Have you done anything to end slavery today? What about the people held as slaves who are still alive? Have you not the moral courage of a WIlberforce?

I really am done now, no further interaction with racebaiters and ignorant ranting leftists. 1) slavery is universal because it is inherently logical as an organization of labor in the pre-industrial age. 2) Slavery ended because the Christian civilization of the West came to understand the contradiction between Christian ethics and race slavery. 3) Racially based slavery came about by happenstance, but was justified by the scientific effort at universal hierarchal taxonomy growing out of the Enlightenment and the explicit rejection of Faith. 4) The United States remains the Last Best Hope of Suffering Humanity. 5) The left's onbsession with race is, in psychological terms, pure projection. Pluck the beam....

Once again Hugh, I present an historical fact, and you hit me with a personal attack. You're not fooling anyone on this thread into thinking you have any idea what you're talking about.

Hey Hugh, what gets you so agitated – and in high dudgeon -- about 'racebaiters'? Could it be because you are the genuine racist article being 'baited'? Anyone with even a fragmentary acquaintance with human psychology knows that only real racists feel compelled -- whether subconsciously or consciously -- to react with such hyperbolic indignation to accusations of being racist. Your continued, sanctimonious commentary merely confirms your guilt as charged. But the real kicker is the pretension to scholarly authority with which you wrap every one of your empirically unfounded claims to knowledge about slavery or most anything else. Your contentions regarding the accomplishments of religion vis-à-vis slavery are as baseless as religion's nonexistent proof of God. After all, who do you think underwrote American slavery, both financially and morally? Naturally, the Christian Church -- certainly not atheists -- and the individual, mercenary and merchantilist Christians who subscribed to it, most prominently the James DeWolf family of Bristol, Rhode Island, the largest slave-traders in US history. Arguing that Christianity stanched slavery after supporting it for hundreds of years is true -- yet trite and grossly myopic. The bottom line is that you are a font of projection and a paragon of hypocrisy, trying to pass off spurious argument for definitive fact and personal bias for objective knowledge. Being such a woeful and irredeemable mess, you would be doing yourself and the rest of us here a grand favor by signing off, racist poseur that you are.
