Last Chance: Free Paper Shredding Program in Lacey Friday

Residents can shred paper for free throughout the county

Now in its fifth year, Ocean County will offer its free paper shredding program beginning Friday, April 27 in Lacey.

"This is a great opportunity for residents to shred their sensitive documents safely and free of charge," said Freeholder James F. Lacey.

Residents are welcome to bring documents for shredding, but commercial records cannot be accommodated, Lacey said. A county vendor will shred up to six boxes or bags of papers for each resident, he explained.

Autoshred will have a truck with an 8,000-pound capacity at each location. The company’s workers are bonded, uniform, and insured. The shredder feeds documents automatically so there is no human contact with the papers.

"We make every effort to make this program convenient for all of our residents," said Lacey, who serves as liaison to the county's recycling programs. "This is one way the county can help in the fight against identity theft by giving our residents the opportunity to securely destroy their old documents."

Paper clips and staples can be left in documents being shredded, Lacey said.

This year's program offers more dates than previous years. Registration is not required to bring papers to any of the locations. The service will be offered from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day.

Residents are encouraged to come earlier on each shredding day because the truck could get filled prior to 1 p.m., said Ernie Kuhlwein, director of Solid Waste Management.

Stops include:

  • April 27 at the Lacey Township recycling center on Municipal Lane.
  • May 2 at the Little Egg Harbor Township Community Center on West Calabreeze Way
  • May 11 at the Lakewood Township Public Works Yard on America Avenue.
  • May 12 at the Plumstead Recycling Center on Cedar Street from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • May 18 at the Lavalette Boro fire house on Washington Avenue.
  • May 25 at the Jackson Township Public Works Garage on Don Connor Boulevard.
