Lacey Municipal Alliance Gearing Up For Aug. 27 5K Race

Proceeds to benefit substance abuse prevention and recreation department

With the annual 5K Race just over a month away, the Lacey Township Municipal Alliance has gone into high gear in planning for the event.

At last night’s Municipal Alliance meeting, the group discussed details of fundraising, donations and efforts to make the race unique. There also was discussion about changing the course to allow for a wider area at the start of the race to avoid bunching up of runners.

So far, 22 runners have registered. Pre-registration by Aug. 12 is $23 per runner. After that and the day of the race, the cost is $28. Students 18 and under are $15.

To build enthusiasm for the race, the Recreation Department started a training course this year for the 5K, which is being attended by 28 people from ages 31 to 64.

“There are people who have never run before and people who used to run and wanted to get back into it,” said James Wioland, Lacey Township Recreation Director. “They are using the class as a catalyst to a healthier lifestyle.”

Wioland said the group is extremely enthusiastic and even the heat from last week didn’t stop them from coming to the class. Due to the great response, a second instructor was brought in and the group was broken into two levels.

“They’ve been pretty dedicated and all are doing very well,” said Wioland, whose wife is taking the class.

Race registration was included in the cost for the training class. Wioland believes at least 90 percent of the class participants will run on race day.

For those who want to participate but do not want to run the 5K, there will be a 1-mile Fun Run or Walk and a Kiddie Dash. The 1-mile pre-registered fee is $10; $15 after August 12 and race day. The Kiddie Dash is $5 per child, with all participants receiving ribbons and free Italian ices.

All pre-registered runners will receive moisture-wicking custom designed shirts. For those registering after that and on race day, shirts will be available while supplies last.

The race will take place at Gille Park on Manchester Avenue in Forked River and will follow a flat, scenic route.
