Lacey MUA Commissioners Close Two Wells Permanently

Two wells that serviced sections of Lacey in the past have been decommissioned, Lacey Municipal Utilities Authority Director Edward Wolff said.

"They have not been in service since 2005," Wolff said recently. "They are very low producers."

The two wells - known collectively as the Brookdale wells - were originally constructed by the developer of the Pheasant Run development, he said.

The MUA took over the two wells back in the 1990s, at the developer's request, Wolff said.

"They turned them over to us," he said.

But the Brookdale wells lacked a proper filtration system, only pumped 100 gallons per minute and the water had a high iron content, so they were taken out of service in 2005, Wolff said.

"The water quality is not as good as our other sources," Wolff said. "We made the decision to abandon the wells."

The MUA currently has five other wells in service and two new wells under construction that are capable of producing 1,500 gallons per minute, he said.

"By the end of September, one will be up and running," Wolff said.

The MUA commissioners made the decision to abandon the Brookdale wells at the Aug. 7 meeting.
