Lacey Lightning Baseball Team Honored by Township Committee

The Lacey Lightning 10U II travel baseball team has been undefeated for two consecutive seasons and won the last five league championships

The Lacey Lightning 10U II travel baseball team was honored by the township committee for two consecutive undefeated seasons and for bringing home another championship.

“I can’t imagine the time and effort that they all put in,” Mayor Mark Dykoff said. “The kids love it. It’s absolutely a great organization. Congratulations to the kids, coaches and the parents.”

A proclamation was presented to the players and coaches applauding them for their dedication and success this season and in recent years. The proclamation stated that the team is a “fine example of the youth in our township.”

The Lacey Lightning not only went undefeated this past fall but it was the fifth season in a row that the team won the championship for the American Division of the United States Amateur Baseball League. The team has an overall record of 55-3-1.

“These boys play hard and never give up,” Manager Jack Sramaty said.

The team took the championship victory against the Howell Jersey Brawlers 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“As a team we pulled together and worked hard,” pitcher Ryan Thompson said. “Through the times of not playing defense, we stepped up our hitting.”

The greatest achievement for the team this past season was coming back in the semi finals against the Jersey Warriors, a team based out of Newark, Thompson said. The Lacey Lighting were losing 4-1 when Thompson came in to pitch, leading the team to a 5-4 victory.

The Lacey Lightning Travel Baseball Club is comprised of teams in various age divisions from 8 to 18 years old. The organization works with the Lacey Little League and the Lacey Township Recreation Department to use the fields at Clune Park.

The organization holds tryouts for the playoffs. This 10U team has been playing together since the summer of 2009, Sramaty said.

“A few players have come and gone, but the core of the team has played together since the beginning,” he said. “This team started playing in the 8-year-old division and have moved up through the age divisions together since then.”

During the regular season, the Lacey Lightning played against teams as far as Hamilton and North Jersey. In tournaments, they have played teams from New York and Maryland.

"The group of boys playing together now are a great group of 10 and 11-year-old boys who have a great amount of dedication to our team,” he said.

The boys, 10 from Lacey and one from Barnegat, start practicing in January and continue through the middle of November.
