Police: 'Erratic' Driver Charged With DUI

A Forked River man was charged with driving under the influence and possession of heroin

A Forked River man was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence after police found him to be driving erratically.

Derek Russell, 21, was observed driving erratically by a Lacey Township Detective on Wednesday, July 11. Russell appeared to be extremely lethargic when the vehicle stopped at the intersection of Beach Boulevard and Route 9, police said.

The vehicle proceeded south on Route 9 where Waretown Police and Lacey Detectives conducted a traffic stop. Russell was found to be in possession of heroin and drug paraphernalia.

Russell was charged with driving under the influence and possession of heroin. He was released on his own recognizance pending a court appearance.

jail isn't a place for someone like derek. he should be in rehab. addiction is a disease. he's not a repeat offender of any drug offenses. should he be driving? no. on that point i think we ALL agree. no one under the influence of ANY chemical, including alcohol and prescription narcotics, should be driving. but throwing someone like this in jail isn't an answer. sweeping them off the streets and putting them in detox while they wait for a rehab bed to open up IS.
Derek Russell July 13, 2012 at 02:34 PM
This makes me sick. You all think you know what you're talking about, however THE REAL TRUTH is that I was at a house giving someone a ride THAT WAS BEING WATCHED and I had no idea where I was going so I switched seats with my friend and the police thought it was suspicious and pulled us over. The asked me to get out of the car, and they found 4 EMPTY BAGS OF HEROIN AND A EMPTY NEEDLE WRAPPER shoved in the pouch of my driver's seat. This article isn't fully correct. Believe NONE OF WHAT YOU HEAR, HALF OF WHAT YOU SEE. I grew up in this town, in the same house, in the same neighborhood... I went through all Lacey School systems, graduated, went on to get my Med Tech, and yes I got caught up in prescription pain killers... that's no secret. Dope? Absolutely not. And it's funny how you all hide behind "nick-names" but YOU STEPHANIE? We used to be friends you slept at my house HOW MANY TIMES? If anyone knows me, which half of these people bashing drug addicts don't, they would know I'm a good person and I'd do anything for anyone THAT'S WHY I GOT THIS CHARGE, TAKING SOMEONE TO THEIR INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT. GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT do you know how embarassing and hurtful these things are? My family and THE ENTIRE TOWN I GREW UP IN, PAST TEACHERS, ETC. all have to read this! I'm absolutely disgusted. Addiction is a gene and a disease and if I was using heroin WHERE WAS THE NEEDLE PEOPLE? They didn't find one of those and they TORE MY CAR A PART AND LEFT ME TO CLEAN IT!
Derek Russell July 13, 2012 at 02:44 PM
Also, for the record (since I ran out of room and my first comment may get deleted) I WOULD NEVER hurt or ROB ANYONE. Do you know what they do to people like me in jail? But of course everyone wants to point fingers and point the blame. I was raised in a non-smoking, non-drinking, non-drug using family with an excellent upbringing. Life happens and mistakes don't make me a bad person. The first time you pick up that first drug, that demon of addiction enters you and never leaves, no matter how long you stay clean. And as for being a drug addict my whole life? I didn't even touch a cigarette until I was old enough to BUY THEM MYSELF. This portrays me in the worst light. After how people in this town treated me all my life I'm suprised prescription pain killers isn't the only thing I did, most kids KILL THEMSELVES after being bullied and tourchered the way I was my whole life. Wake up people. Life happens.
Derek Russell July 13, 2012 at 03:17 PM
I wasn't driving erratically, that was just the excuse they used to pull me over because I was leaving a house that was being watched. I have two points on my license for speeding on the parkway that's it. Don't be so quick to judge because YOU WEREN'T THERE!
MyOhMy July 13, 2012 at 04:43 PM
how did the empty bags and needle wrapper get in your car? I am confused. And yes, I totally agree with you, addiction is genetic and a disease. Too bad most poeple don't understand that :-(
Phenobarbidoll July 13, 2012 at 05:37 PM
I'm not sure your legal counsel would encourage you to say anything about this publicly, Derek.
Gage Laird July 13, 2012 at 05:40 PM
What a waste.
ATIS2012 July 13, 2012 at 06:18 PM
you dont need a needle to do heroin....
ATIS2012 July 13, 2012 at 06:20 PM
oh, and it's YOUR car, and you said the "empty bags" and "needle wrapper" were in the pouch of YOUR seat..... i guess someone broke into your car the night before and planted this contraband?
Derek Russell July 13, 2012 at 07:54 PM
Because someone's lazy self stuffed them in the pouch behind my driver's seat. And Gage if I'm such a waste why bother taking your time to read and comment?
Phenobarbidoll July 13, 2012 at 08:18 PM
no, that's not what I said, Linny. let me recap... no one should be driving under the influence of any chemical, including alcohol. throwing a first time offender (who did NOT have an accident/hurt another person) in jail may not be an answer, but perhaps getting them off the street via placing them in a residential detoxification center is.
LaceyCitizen1 July 13, 2012 at 08:25 PM
I think he has a problem and should do sometime in a rehab and then do some jail time. Anyone can fix them selfs trust me I know I was him I was a scumbag fiend and with a little help I'm now 11 years clean
Resident of Lacey July 13, 2012 at 08:26 PM
Derek, some of the comments on here are down right brutal and based on opinion. There is even one poster that thinks that we will have a major crime wave sweeping Lacey when white castle opens it doors. I am sure there are other bits and pieces of information that go along with the events that happened. I would however; if I were you remain mute on this as I am sure any other attorney would recommend to you. I do not know you and if you truly did make a mistake then clean it up and move up and do not waste time worrying about public opinion. In politics your advised to have "thick skin" and right now that would help you. Shake it off and move on assuming you are the stand up person you claim to be you'll have no problem clearing you name after it is all done with.

Derek is right. This site is not only damaging his reputation but his FAMILY'S, and it's a shame that people are failing to take that into consideration. I grew up with Derek and have slept over his house multiple times, only to be welcomed by friendly parents and a great environment. Everyone makes mistakes, and while as a former friend I am in no way proud of the road Derek has decided to take, he is allowed to make his own decisions. Nobody should be on the road when under the influence, but maybe we all need to understand that these articles don't need to be accurate to be posted. Don't let anyone get to you Derek. Most of these comments are coming from uneducated losers who are sitting on Lacey Patch everyday of their lives looking for drama. I hope everything works out for you - be smart!
Isheet Mipants July 13, 2012 at 10:09 PM
Sounds to me like you have alot of excuses for your actions but have no excuses for your actions as well! You need help dude. Do it before you kill somebody please

Hey Allison maybe there would be more room in jails for the criminals, if we would stop putting fathers in jail for child support when their out of work. Till then hope they keep putting them back out.
