Lanoka Harbor EMS Raffle to Help Cover Hurricane Sandy Costs

The drawing for $1,000 in gift prizes will be on Wednesday, Dec. 12

The Lanoka Harbor EMS is sponsoring its first annual Winter Raffle fundraiser.

The raffle, which began on Sept. 9, had sales interrupted due to Hurricane Sandy and the nor’easter.

“Members found it difficult to sell tickets because many people had either lost homes or had been without power for an extended period of time,” said George Resetar, President of Lanoka Harbor EMS.

All funds acquired from the raffle will be used to offset the expenses for the raffle prizes and the remainder will go towards recovering funds that were exhausted during Sandy, the release said.

“From the Sunday before the storm, the leadership and members of Lanoka Harbor EMS had all apparatus staffed and ready to go,” he said.

Lanoka Harbor EMS stocked up on food and supplies in advance of the storm in anticipation for a building that would be packed with volunteers, he said.

“For the next 14 days, the resources of Lanoka Harbor EMS were put to the test handling over 60 calls,” he said. “These included rescue efforts during the height of the storm as well as filling oxygen bottles for those who were without power and unable to utilize their electric concentrators.”

The squad is asking for help to make the fundraiser a success so that they do not incur more debt as a result of it, he said.

There is $1,000 in gift prizes, which includes a Toshiba 50-inch LED flat-screen television for first place, an Xbox gaming system for second place and a $100 Visa gift car for third place.

Approximately 1,000 tickets were printed but not all sold, increasing the chances of winning, Resetar said.

Tickets cost $10 each and will be available on Saturday, Dec. 8 at the High School Sundaes with Santa event.

Crews are also available to offer tickets at Lanoka Harbor EMS daily at 7 p.m. Lanoka Harbor EMS is located at 305 Manchester Avenue.

The drawing will be done on Wednesday, Dec. 12 at 4 p.m.
