Head-On ATV Crash Sends Two to Hospital

A Little Egg Harbor male and Lacey female were served summonses and airlifted to Jersey Shore Medical Center Monday afternoon

Two patients were airlifted to the hospital after an ATV accident in the Greenwood Forest, said John Hode, president of Lacey EMS.

Jordan P. Penna, 19, of Little Egg Harbor and Brooke A. Lazok, 18, of Forked River were transported by medevac to Jersey Shore Medical Hospital after a two-quad collision this afternoon, Lt. James Veltri said.

Lacey EMS responded to the scene of the head-on collision at 3:38 p.m. on Monday, Hode said. The accident one-mile-and-a-half in the woods off the west side of Route 539 with the nearest cross street of Bloody Ridge Road.

Lazok and Penna’s quads collided with each other while they were both traveling west on Bloody Ridge Road, Veltri said.

Both Lazok and Penna suffered internal injuries and were airlifted to the hospital, he said. Although Lazok and Penna were wearing helmets, Penna suffered a head injury and lost consciousness for a short period of time after the crash.

Penna and Lazok were issued summonses for reckless driving, driving unregistered vehicles and driving vehicles not covered by insurance.

Lacey Township Police Department, Bamber Lake Fire Company, Forked River Fire Company, Lacey EMS and Paramedics from MONOC responded to the scene.

Hello I'm Jordan. I just would like to say, that someone of you have the most arrogant opinions I have ever heard. First of all it wasn't a head on collision. And second of all I don't know what happened or remember but I'm sure we went through a pretty deep puddle and lost Control. Its not like I ride crazy or anything. And third of all I'm nor a Benny I was born and raised here. And I moved to little egg about a year ago because of its location. Yeah its your opinion, but its a shitty one. My girlfriend Brooke and I don't deserve to be bashed on like this. I feel like you people sit on the computer and just like to harass people. I got to say I did get upset and I hope you know you hurt my feelings. Thank you for the people who are mature and I appreciate your thoughts and prayers.

Well said al davis. It's all about the money in this town fine for this fine for that. Now you're being fined for getting hurt.
Jim April 3, 2012 at 12:26 pm
Not everyone is like that, but there are a few mean people who like to write nasty things and make others people feel bad. Fortunately they have no power to do so, if you don't let them. I (and other sane people) hope you and your friend make full recoveries soon.
Jv for life April 3, 2012 at 12:36 pm
How's Brooke?
Sandy April 3, 2012 at 12:46 pm
Hey Jordan - I wish you and Brooke a speedy recovery. Accidents happen - that is why they are called accidents and all of us have had them - yours was just a little more "sensational". Some of the posts on here just show the ignorance of people who like to make assumptions. You are both in my thoughts and prayers.
laura lowney April 3, 2012 at 01:05 pm
your not a redneck jorden your a piney :) and glad to read that your well enough to post on this i hope your girlfriend and your quads are ok. hopefully youll be riding again soon.....happy trails
Laura E April 3, 2012 at 01:20 pm
I was thinking the same thing.
Laura E April 3, 2012 at 01:34 pm
First and foremost, speedy recovery to the kids. As far as the tickets go, depending on where they were riding (not familiar with the "real" names of the woods), it could have been private property or the preserve. Yes, they are just kids having fun, I get that but it's still illegal unless it's on their own property. The liability for the property owner is astronomical when someone gets hurt. Trespassing is against the law. I think it sucks they got hurt and yeah, I think it sucks they got tickets, but the law is the law. The cops were doing their job, not only by getting them help, but punishing them for being where they shouldn't have been. If these kids had a LEGAL place to drive their off road vehicles, we wouldn't be saying anymore than, Get Well Soon! Lacey...WAKE UP! Give these kids safe places to be kids or else they'll get involved in illegal activities...oops, too late! We already have kids stealing, drugging, partying and reeking havoc. If Lacey cared about their kids they would be finding ways to give them safe, fun, LEGAL activities to keep them off the streets and out of trouble. JMO
Jignoshi April 3, 2012 at 01:42 pm
The cops just added insult to injury by issuing tickets to good kids having good clean fun.
Capt Jacobsen Mey April 3, 2012 at 02:06 pm
Some of you jokers need to read up on the NJ laws regarding recreational vehicle use in this state - then you would know that they were given citations based on the laws in place, not because of any other "conspiracy" BS.
I wish for a speedy recovery of both kids, hopefully they will be back to riding soon. Parents who do purchase quads, dirt bikes, go karts etc for their kids need to be aware of the laws regarding the use of those vehicles, even if the Seller or Dealer is not disclosing that info. In some instances, if a person is severely hurt on such a vehicle and it was not properly registered, insured or used in a safe manner, their claims to insurance to cover medical expenses can be denied, then the entire cost burden is out of pocket and on the family. It's no joke, seriously, know the laws and be aware of what is and is not covered by your insurance in the event of an accident. It's a shame they got hurt. I will also agree that there needs to be more off road recreational parks in NJ for dirt bike riders, quad riders and off road 4x4 drivers, after all we have the land space for it and it would bring in monies to towns who open up such an area.
Laurie April 3, 2012 at 02:09 pm
Absolutely! I totally agree.
Jacqueline Ferrara April 3, 2012 at 03:13 pm
My son used to be a security guard at a dirt bike place in Chatworth off 72. Is that place still open? He saw accidents every weekend, some severe some not, but at least they were in the park riding legally. I hope the kids will be ok.
james April 3, 2012 at 03:54 pm
I believe its closed.
Kelley April 3, 2012 at 04:03 pm
Glad you and your girl are okay Jordan! Speedy recoevery and don't worry about all the internet trolls! Anytime your name is put out there, whether for good, bad, or indifferent, trolls will take the opportunity to slander you. Don't worry about it.
Kelley April 3, 2012 at 04:07 pm
Wow that last name is familiar from old police blotters. I guess the 6 of 8 can go to Walmart if theyre not busy arresting you for stuff!
Joe Stewart April 3, 2012 at 04:13 pm
Wow it is amazing how many people forget what it is like to be a kid and have fun. Everyone rode dirt bikes and quads on the street when we were younger. The cops made your parents come and get you and then pay $50 to get the ATV back. Then your parents kicked your butt, which was worse than the tickets.
Kelley April 3, 2012 at 04:24 pm
Yup, the good old days for sure. Too bad now-a-days parents would sue the police department for illegal siezure of the quad, sue the school district for suspending their child because of an arrest, and then complain how back in the day cops used to...
jennifer April 3, 2012 at 04:38 pm
Jordan and Brooke I am glad to hear your on your way to a great recovery. It could have been worse. and too, thank you for the first responders and their quick response, including use of their own personal vehicles to get there and save a life in danger. I am proud mother of that first responder and happy that everyone is ok
Booner April 3, 2012 at 06:04 pm
Maybe they should be dealing dope or robbing houses instead of riding quads in the woods? This is Forked River, not Jersey City. Thats what we do here. Slicker!
Laura E April 3, 2012 at 06:16 pm
@Booner...Yes, that's what we do here and we also know it's illegal. I hear your frustration and I get it. I just wish there was a safe, legal place for this kind of activity. I'm born and raised here for 38 years now. I've been off-roading at a million different places out in Bamber, Dover Forge, etc and even we knew we weren't supposed to be there either, but we had no where else to go. We got chased out by cops every time we got busted. And luckily no one ever got seriously injured, but we knew what chances were were taking, also. You can't fault the cops for ticketing them. Thank god they're gonna be OK.
laceyguy April 3, 2012 at 06:56 pm
The least of their worry is the tickets. For the medivac it costs atleast 10k each. $2,000 for the medics plus hospital bills. The tickets will only run them a couple hundred at most.
kc April 3, 2012 at 07:51 pm
I'm happy to hear you and your girl friend are healing.
Erin April 3, 2012 at 08:26 pm
they should have been insured YES,they should have been more careful YES,.. i would have ticketed them too... hello ..if u operate a vehicle without insurance.. they would have got caught sooner or later... sucks it took them to get HURT before they did...

Why don't these kids go crabbing and fishing anymore. It was a great thing to do whe I growd up
sec April 4, 2012 at 12:03 pm
i happened to be out there driving home and caught up in some of the traffic delay. It must have been serious enough to see the two helicopters fly in. The second one was very impressive seeing a state police helicopter land in that small patch of dirt and to get in and out quickly.
EMS thanks for a great job and you guys in the helicopters. All i can say is "wow"
eRocK April 4, 2012 at 08:29 pm
You people sitting at home really have nothing better to do than banter back and forth about if they should have gotten tickets? And shooting insults at each other? About who lived here first? Who belongs and who doesn't? I can tell you right now, anyone posting about the BS - doesn't belong here or anywhere else where the public can hear your ignorant pandering. Go out, get a life..that's all Jordan & Brooke were doing, having fun & they happened to get into an accident. They did and do not deserve to have this tragedy picked apart by all of you people.
"Kid" - get well soon, you're a trooper & my best to Brooke. <3 eRock
sec April 5, 2012 at 12:16 pm
actually the private medevac known as monoc will cost 10,000 dollars the state police system is actually only 1,400 dollars. Thats the difference in public sector services versus a buisness sector who prey's on people for money
Mary April 6, 2012 at 08:32 pm
Hi Brooke:
We were very sorry to hear of your accident...all best wishes & prayers for your recovery & that of your friend,Jordan. God Bless you both. Martin & Marylyn Power

@proud-- I couldn't agree with you more. I found it quite ironic that she has a blog on Lacey PatchRead More on which she gives her profile, and it never once mentions her employment with Wall Township. Things that make ya go hmmmmmm.
Joey Joe June 20, 2013 at 07:48 am
Below is Ms. Brower's profile on her blog: I have more than 22 years of experience in publicRead More education as I previously served as the Assistant Superintendent of Schools in Freehold Township, a principal, business administrator and a language arts teacher at the middle school level in Point Pleasant. I reside in Monmouth County with my husband where we are raising our 13-year-old son. I hold a Bachelors of Arts degree in Education and a Masters in Administration Supervision and Curriculum Planning from Georgian Court University, as well as a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University. I am the new superintendent of schools in Lacey Township and will be using this blog to keep the community informed and engaged.

@JJ,I'm sure that mentioning being damaged goods from Wall was just an oversight. She also ended upRead More dissing the Patch and it's readers. She went off some accountability rap, if you can believe such a thing.

It's WHAFIS, not WHALIS, and it MUST be incorporated in the overland wave propagation modeling. I'veRead More been telling you this for weeks @Spooner. I offered to discuss it, but you were caught up on some sand blaster theory. BFE's will certainly be affected. As a sidebar, the author of the link mentioned mixed up the mapping terms. We currently have effective maps or FIRM's which establish BFE. The maps (ABFE)that were released in December and adopted as the state building code (+ freeboard) are advisory (incomplete and wrong). Working maps are due out in a few weeks followed shortly thereafter by preliminary maps, which are the maps that can be appealed. Approximately 18 to 24 months after the release of the preliminary maps there will be new effective maps (new FIRM's) with new BFE 's. If the preliminary maps are not drastically different than the ABFE's, you can count on a mass of appeals, and quite likely, protracted litigations.
proud June 11, 2013 at 10:17 am
@Spooner, I have something that you may want to read. Go to the Borough of Mantoloking website. OnRead More the right hand side is a column entitled Post Sandy Information. Near the bottom is a tab called "uncategorized". Click on it and there is a letter used as the Boro response to ABFE. It is very telling and makes a lot of sense.
patricia doyle June 19, 2013 at 11:00 am
Congrats, Pat. You deserve this. Despite all you've been through, you kept it going with your job,Read More your writing, and all the "chronicles" that expressed the plight of the Sandy victims in a way that no one else could. That has been so appreciated.
