Garbage Truck Sustains Damage After Engine Fire

No injuries were reported after flames engulfed the vehicle

A garbage truck sustained damage after a fire ignited in the engine on Monday, Nov. 7, police said.

Police responded to a report of a vehicle fire on Route 9 at approximately 8:46 a.m. Flames engulfed the cab of a 1994 Mack Garbage Truck. No injuries were reported.

The truck was on its route while Carlos Cabrera, 54, of Forked River was operating the forks of the vehicle and heard an explosion from the engine, police said.

The Lanoka Harbor Fire Department extinguished the fire while the Ocean County Fire Marshal and Detective Ronald Buxton from the Lacey Township Police Department investigated the scene.

The incident was deemed not suspicious, police said. Police determined the fire was due to the amount of hydraulic fluid and oil leaking from the truck.

The truck, which was later towed from the scene, and he engine sustained heavy burn, spoke and water damage, police said.

The Board of Health and Berkeley Township HazMat Team also responded.
