Forked River Woman Charged With Driving Drunk With Baby In Car

Woman taken to Community Medical Center for treatment of a "high level of intoxication," police chief says

Police recently arrested a Forked River woman who was very intoxicated and driving with an infant in her car, Police Chief David A. Paprota said.

Heather M. Schmidt, 30, Wyatt Court, was stopped by Patrolman Dimitri Tsarnas at 11:47 p.m. on March 24. She was arrested at the scene, the chief said.

She was transported to police headquarters and processed, then taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment due to her "high level of intoxication," Paprota said.

Smith was charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, and operating an unregistered vehicle, the chief said.

Schmidt also received a criminal summons for operating a motor vehicle with a minor passenger while driving under the influence, Paprota said.

The New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency was contacted due to the presence of an infant child in the vehicle, he said..
