Environment Unharmed After Boat's Oil Spill

Local hazmat team contained an oil spill while a boat was sinking at a local marina

The oil spill caused by a sinking boat at Southwinds Harbor Marina did not cause any environmental impacts, said Larry Hajna, spokesperson for the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

A 29-foot cabin cruiser was discovered sinking at the marina at approximately 6:50 a.m. on Aug. 22, Lieutenant Scott Tirella said.

The boat was submerged in the Barnegat Bay and was leaking oil and gasoline from the engine, said Chief Kevin Flynn of the Forked River Fire Department said.
