Drug Searches Conducted at Lacey High School Wednesday

Police, K9s search school in prosecutors office effort

Law enforcement led by the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office conducted drug searches at Lacey High School on Wednesday morning.

The searches, which included officers and drug-sniffing dogs, is part of an effort by county prosecutor Joseph Coronato to combat a drug epidemic – mainly fueled by heroin – that has claimed more than 100 lives in Ocean County so far this year.

"Last month we went to High School East in Toms River, this month we went to Lacey High School," said Al Della Fave, spokesman for the prosecutor's office.

The search "went well," but because anyone possessing drugs would likely be a juvenile, the office is not commenting on what, exactly, the search yielded or who might be charged as a result.

"Being that they are all juveniles, we’re not speaking to anything that’s found," said Della Fave.

Students who were found to have drugs in their possession had their parents notified, Della Fave said.

"It’s about saving lives, it’s about helping parents become aware of any issues in their households," he said, adding that the township school district was very cooperative in allowing authorities to conduct its search.

Well Proud, clearly we have revealed ourselves to be against children and for drug addiction, we have shown our true colors.
stupidstuff December 11, 2013 at 11:01 PM
So, it's up to the police, schools, etc., to protect the children from drugs...WHAT ABOUT THE PARENTS??? It's not the parents responsibility anymore?? How about the police do their job going after the drug dealers? And to hear many of you parents pushing for drug testing for your children, including those who are innocent?? It is absolutely disgusting and sickening to see how far we've become letting the police state/big brother take care of your kids!!
NDK December 11, 2013 at 11:25 PM
@stupidstuff...should we be ignorant to assume the drug dealers aren't our high schoolers. too?..Therefore..the police are going after the drug dealers..aren't they?
JOHNNY Done it December 12, 2013 at 12:11 AM
@Stupidstuff Most these parents are stupid & don't pay attention to their own kids Than to go do something stupid like revolting because maybe found a new boyfriend/girlfriend while separated & the kids crying out for attention than do anything to feel good ..like hit the drug cabinet at home than after trying to found another fix than steal to pay for it .as you can see the parents are doing a wonderful job Now they become the publics problem..
JOHNNY Done it December 12, 2013 at 12:17 AM
The media was there to bring attention to the problem that many parents in this town don't think is hear,,,Thanks for the previous useless police chief who did nothing & the school board for doing the same .I guess it got some attention now being on Ch 2& 12 news I say hit the school again & the middle school...THis are public buildings & are & can be subject to searches
Randy Butternubs December 12, 2013 at 02:09 AM
You are right Kelly. Calling the media to come see how much He cares about our children. I didn't think of that . whether it good or bad that tells me he is a shady guy playing some kind of game to position himself politically
Winston Smith December 12, 2013 at 02:09 AM
Pretty ironic that 4Liberty doesn't understand liberty at all. Please change you name to h8liberty, since you clearly do. Don is the only one here that gets it. What a bunch of emoting fools!
Ryan Murray December 12, 2013 at 02:48 AM
Lacey High School is a bit ridicolous. Not that I am against that effort on Wednesday, but it seems like more of a publicity stunt than anything else. I remember going to LTHS in the 90s, and they would classify you as a drug user or dealer for the dumbest reasons, like owning a beeper which I had so my mother could always be in touch. Even if you dozed off a little (which everyone has done before) you went right to the office and had to pee in a cup. I had wr11 drugtests in my 2 years at that hellhole, and passed everyone. Adamsky, if you are still out there, Kiss my Ass!! Why not find the source of these drugs, and start the fight there. Trust me a slap on the wrist to a teenager means nothing. That will not solve the problem. How many of you parents attend the town meetings in Lacey TWP about drugs and the problems they cause? I can probably count them on one hand. Better yet, lets just waste tax payers money, and conduct a operation like this that catches little kids who are so nieve. Call it a victory if you want to guys, but that solves nothing. Get your heads out of your asses and start doing something constructive because that certainly wasnt. Im sure the kids who got caught are all laughing about it over their extended xmas break

@ grace believe none of what you hear & half of what you see. Those that say don't know ,and those that know won't Say.

@hardesthit, speak for yourself.
The truth December 12, 2013 at 06:32 AM
why hold back the names? there names are known if tbey get in a fight or caught stealing at walmart. publish the names stop hiding behind closed doors. what will be the consequences from the school level,,,,couple days detention?
hardesthit December 12, 2013 at 07:46 AM
@proud, sorry if I offended you, I was kidding,it wont happen again.
Concerned local December 12, 2013 at 07:48 AM
My two High School students said they made three drug busts and there was a dog chase down that led to a child being bit by a drug dog???? Supposedly blood in one of the hallways to prove the bite rumor???? Lacey PD... How about some details so we don't have to go by what the kids are saying???? No names - of course (=minors), just what was seized / how many seperate busts/ and if all went smoothly??? Hope the dog bite incident is NOT true as I am a HUGE supporter of this operation and would hate to see it ended due to something wrong done by the searching party??? Can anyone from the patch try to DIG up some more details - post search???= GREAT and DESIRED follow-up!
Cheri Beatty December 12, 2013 at 07:52 AM
This is my post to Facebook yesterday: To the folks in Lacey who are screaming out against today's drug sweep at the high school...I wish you could see what I see, the dead people dumped at the door of the ER, the high pregnant ones missing teeth finding some way to eek out a Percocet for some phantom tooth pain, the intubated brain dead ones who just aren't going to make it no matter how much their mom cries over them, the couple of roommates who've obviously shared needles and now need treatment for their matching facial MRSA infections...sounds awful, right? Little too harsh? You think it's not real??? It's there...every freaking day. Ocean County NJ has the dubious distinction of going over the 100 mark in deaths attributable to heroin. 104 lives--sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, neighbors, grandparents, young, old. 104. So parents who are saying their childrens' rights have been violated--what are you hiding??? What are you afraid of??? Come and ride on a medic truck, sit in the ER, 'cause I promise you--you're going to receive more of an education then you ever bargained for. Come with me and help me sit with that mom who tried and tried to keep her kid clean, and now has to go home to an empty room that will never see her baby ever again. Then--and only then-- will I allow you to attempt to tell me about how your child's rights were violated. Keep up the good work Ocean County Prosecutor's office.
Cheri Beatty December 12, 2013 at 07:56 AM
Blast me if you want, I don't care. I can't do anything but take care of these folks as they come in. Then I get to go home and cry because I care. Because I love my job. Because I know every one of those addicts had someone somewhere along the way that loved them and is dying inside while their child is committing a slow suicide. So what if it's a TV stunt, so what if it's grandstanding---I really don't care. Own up to this problem. Because it's all of our problem. It's everywhere. We have to fix this now.
proud December 12, 2013 at 08:04 AM
@hardesthit, no offense se taken whatsoever. @Cheri, I agree with you 100%. The population must be contained. Bars on the classroom doors; guard towers; subsidized lunch passed through a slot; and a pack of Stalag 17 dogs is the only answer. Followed, of course, by a press conference by the Gestapo.
grace December 12, 2013 at 08:30 AM
dearest@4liberty thank you for your service in law enforcement and for being honest. i remember when my son got to 7th grade middle school and i found out about smoking cigs in bathroom and outside there i was shocked lol then the sex stuff in the hallway and then the pot so i do believe its hitting younger and younger even with the program he had in kindergarten and dare .... u know its bad when you see task force early mornings on the way to another raid.. i am so afraid for our kids.....
WhyohWhy December 12, 2013 at 10:08 AM
Very well said Cheri Beatty! Kudos!!! I concur! And to Concerned local try focusing all that nosey energy in a constructive way!!! Why is it so important ? Imagine if you were the parent of one of those kids!!!
Winston Smith December 12, 2013 at 10:27 AM
@Proud yes! Everyone under 70 should be in concentration camps. If your not doing anything wrong you shouldn't have a problem with it. Only a druggy or a kid hater would be against this.
Gustavo@Los Pollos Hermanos inc . December 12, 2013 at 10:49 AM
@ concerned local I willing to bet the farm that either your two high school students are full of sh** or who ever told them that bologna is ! If you believe that enough to even re comment that ,you should change your name to the gullible local. I for one don't see how anyone s rights are being violated ,its a public school not a private school and they have every right to run a k9 down the hallways and lockers which do not belong to the students but are only assigned ( slight bit of entitlement from the naysayers ) . The dogs go no where near the students whatsoever . 15 years ago when I went to lacey high this was done all the time with no protest from parents ,no politician take political claim for a job well done ,and no stupid media coverage . It did how ever prevent myself and my smarter peers from bringing a nickel bag of weed ( for consumption after the day finished) to school or to be left in the parking lot . Because we knew at anytime the dogs could come. Now a days it's not pot it's heroin . The dogs are a great deterrent for drugs to brought to class.
grace December 12, 2013 at 11:40 AM
@cheri you have me in tears right now...i just cant take this anymore. its so sad..did our generation lead to this? idk but as a mom i do feel responsible when my child does something wrong just sayin
Concerned local December 12, 2013 at 12:06 PM
@ whyohwhy not nosey....just trying to let our community ACTUALLY know what is going on in our high school??? Can't just claim we have a drug problem in school - back it up... We don't need to know names - we need to grasp the problem as it stands. Believe it or not, there are some people who are not seeing this drug problem simply because it does not exist in their own little circle of life and friends. Our community NEEDS TO KNOW what the problem is (in this case what has TRULY been found in our schools) so they can come up with more plans of action. You can't just expect people to organize remedies to problems that are not clearly being stated??? Again- some people TRULY are not aware of the drugs that surround their children when they are within the high school walls. You must inform if you are looking for backup to solve this problem. If you stand alone with the knowledge you will most likely stand alone with the solution... and we all know that it takes more than police action to help this falling community. I chose the word falling over the word failing - because I believe we are making an effort in this fight. Please don't close out the people who are trying to help by telling them they don't need to know. Not knowing is what got us into this mess!!!
grace December 12, 2013 at 12:50 PM
how about we go back to putting younger officers male/female in the highschools...undercover and maybe a liason for kids to talk to
justwondering December 12, 2013 at 12:58 PM
i agree they need to do the "sweep" i do not agree with the media circus. an FYI these sweeps where done back in the late 80's at lacey high when i attended. and i dont remember the hype. then again we didnt have this social media back then either. but still had the drug problems.
ed crowley December 12, 2013 at 01:02 PM
As Gustav said this keeps the student nervous that they could get caught. We are adults we can not think like children " teenage logic". The rumors also help think about what you hear. A little fear in children helps.
grace December 12, 2013 at 01:05 PM
i am sure coronato has" higher" ambitions but really right now he is at least doing something.. the morning raids in toms river..which people have seen early a m are starting to scare the dealers i hope! the school raids too!
grace December 12, 2013 at 01:35 PM
AGREED @ kelley and nancy!!
GET OVER IT December 12, 2013 at 04:03 PM
@Cheri, it is so sad to know what is going on, none the less to have to see it day in and day out on a first hand basis, I commend you on what you do because I know myself I would never be able to handle that. As of last week, I have finally made the decision to start the process of moving out of this town. I know this problem is everywhere, but there are places where it isn't so abundant. Anyone on here who opposes what the LTPD is doing must not be parents, or must be the ones we talk about that just don't care. I on the other hand DO care. I do everything I can to keep them on the right path. Keep them involved in activities and clubs. They are not allowed at anyone's house unless I know the parents and have been to the house to see the surroundings they will be in. But no matter what I do, I know I can't shelter them every minute of every day so by all means, if the school suspects or sees something that I may not, do what you need to do...with my consent of course... to make sure they haven't fallen in with the wrong crowd etc.etc..... But as a parent it is sad when you have to be afraid just to send them to school, or let them ride their bike, or do anything for that matter. To see these kids as young as 10 riding bikes all over town by themselves, or 14 and 15 year olds walking around at all hours of the night....What the hell goes through these parents heads??
grace December 12, 2013 at 05:58 PM
@get over it my only 2 suggestions are 1 do not move to toms river its so much worse there 2 enroll them in mon don/ st joes
John Walton December 15, 2013 at 04:19 PM
This was just a little show. They called CBS news and at least one other major network news to cover it. A little show because actually stopping the heroin from coming into thier town is a very difficult or nearly impossible job that the police are not equipped for. This problem is beyond simple law enforcement, there has to be a more intelligent approach with real effort on the town and citizens part. D.A.R.E ain't cutting it.
