The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced a woman from a cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean off Toms River on Thursday.

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector Delaware Bay in Philadelphia received notification from the cruise ship Carnival Splendor of an 84-year-old Canadian female who fell, injured her hip, and was in need of medical attention, the Coast Guard said in a statement.

A helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City arrived on scene, hoisted the woman and transferred her to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City, the statement said.

"This case is a great example of how Coast Guard training has a real-world impact," said Lt. Marc McDonnell, the aircraft commander on the case. "Our aircrew had just completed hoist training when we received the medevac request. Our rescue swimmer and flight mechanic did an exceptional job managing the medevac and we were able to quickly transport the patient to the hospital for further care. It's great to see how our training can make a difference in someone's life."

I feel bad for the woman, but I feel even worse for the surprise this Canadian will get when she finds out how expensive healthcare is in America!

The way Obama has cut the budget to the military we are lucky to have a coast guard. I thank GOD we still have a coast guard. Good job to our men and women of the service. GOD Bless you all.

Obama equals communist...he would have let her die by cutting back so much of our military.

@Janet Dennis Stulich - surprising as it may be Canadians come to the US for medical care on purpose - not just when they fall ill on a cruise ship. I know of a few Canadians that have needed heart operations, organ transplants etc and found that the Canadian medical system didn't have the talent to treat them... so over the border they came to get what they needed. yeah it cost them $$$ to get that treatment, but they all claim they'd be 6'under had they stayed up there to get it.

Sadly the article was a human interest story that was once again turned into a political argument Any chance of taking a break on that stuff? Geesh

Obama is the worst president in history. Makes jimmy carter look good. Obamacare stinks. Hence the reason Canadians come to us for health care. Socialist medicine doesn't work
suz February 07, 2014 at 07:41 PM
That is very true, Chucky.
Mac February 07, 2014 at 07:58 PM
WTG Coast Guard - you created an international incident when you rescued an 84-year-old pregnant illegal alien who is going to give birth in Atlantic City and demand US citizenship - damn Obamacare
MSL February 07, 2014 at 09:58 PM
We had gotten off the Splendor on Wednesday morning and I was watching it on the cruise tracker when it looked like it turned around near Ocean County. Had the best cruise ever and can't wait until next time to go back on that ship.
