Tips for Preventing Winter Pest Problems

Even the cold of winter does not keep rodents and bugs from creeping inside your home. In fact, rats and mice want inside your house more than ever during the winter, and they get inside any way they can find. From bed bugs to field mice, use these tips to protect your home from the invaders.

The smell of garbage attracts a variety of wild animals even in the city, so keep your outdoor trash cans a safe distance away from your home. If you cannot move the trash bins next to the street, place them within a protected barrier. In addition, use safety locks on the lids to keep the rodents from getting inside.

Seal the holes and the cracks in your foundation, walls and roofing. Cracks and crevices make the ideal passageways for bugs, and even small rodents can squeeze into these tiny spaces and find their way into your living areas. Use weatherstripping, caulk and other sealants around the windows and anywhere pests can gain access to your home.

Store your firewood away from your home, and clear away leaf piles and debris from the foundation. Trim back any shrubbery or tree limbs that come in contact with the walls or the roof. Repair any leaks that attract bugs and rodents to the area.
