Where's the Cheapest Gas?

Comparing fuel prices in town

Who needs enemies when you have gas stations?

For many, the gas situation is only getting worse and it’s becoming an apparent way of life in our local area. The national average for Friday, April 29th, according to AAA, rose to $3.90 (from $3.84) for regular, $4.04 (from $3.98) for midgrade and $4.17 (from $4.15) for premium. For the daily national average please visit: fuelgaugereport.aaa.com.

Locally, Barnegat residents are feeling an even greater pinch this week as premium prices go well over the $4.00 dollar mark, with regular soon approaching. By next week most stations in the Jersey Shore area should see midgrade hit the almighty $4.00 dollar mark.

Nationally the problem seems to put politicians in a state of scrambling confusion as they find ways to ease consumer fears of a never-ending cycle of rising prices.

Locally, we may find some comfort in Sen. Robert Menendez’s effort to bring attention to consumer fears. To read an article on Menendez’s plan to cut costs please visit: menendez.senate.gov, or leave an email to his office showing your concern and support for gas price control.

In addition to finding the cheapest gas around it’s also important to take into account other ways to cut down on your gasoline bill. This week’s tip is to keep up on maintenance of your vehicle.

A quick tune up is more beneficial to your mileage than one would think. Experts say that routine tune-ups can ensure you will improve your gas mileage by an average of 4%. This includes keeping up on spark plug maintenance, having clean oxygen sensors, new fuel and air filters, getting rid of faulty engine lights and making sure tire pressure is within manufacture specification. Usually consumers have these articles checked when changing oil. Most are inexpensive and worth burning less fuel as well as ensuring a longer life of your vehicle.
