Snooki, J-wow Headed To Pelican Island in Berkeley?

Berkeley currently has no ordinance regarding filming permission, but that may change, mayor says

Snooki and JWow - Berkeley edition?

That's the word from several township officials that MTV has reportedly rented a Pelican Island home for none other than Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi and Jennifer "JWow" Farley and their "Jersey Shore" MTV spinoff show.

Mayor Carmen F. Amato Jr. said the township was never contacted by MTV or Viacome - the parent company - about the filming. The owner, a local realtor, informed them.

“Obviously, I’m not thrilled about this,” Amato said. “Especially since the Pelican Island section of Berkeley Township was hit hard by Superstorm Sandy. Many residents haven’t been back and those that are are struggling to rebuild.”

Amato said that the township does not have a current ordinance requiring a permit to film.

“In light of this recent development, I have asked our attorney to draft an ordinance that will be introduced at a subsequent Township Council meeting,” he said.

Amato said he plans to visit Pelican Island tonight and has discussed the matter with Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele.

“We have had mixed reactions in the phone calls we have been receiving,” the mayor said. “The township will monitor the situation and react accordingly.”

The house has received a certificate of occupancy, since it passed inspections, he said.

Berkeley officials are considering implementing temporary restrictions for Pelican Island to limit both pedestrian and motor vehicle traffic to homeowners, renters and contractors, Amato said.

Last year, the spinoff show filmed in Manchester, and town officials described the pair as "quiet neighbors," despite their notorious antics on the show.

This is a developing story. Patch will update as more information becomes available.
