Help Those in Need and Lower Your Tax Bill

You have until midnight Friday to make a donation to deduct it from 2011 taxes. Here's where to donate

It's not just a time to help those in need. It's also the last week to make charitable contributions that can be deducted on this year's taxes.

So here are some great local charities that deserve a check:

The Lacey Food Bank serves the community with the mission of making sure that no one in Lacey goes to bed hungry.

A safe haven for animals in need. The organization also includes Popcorn Park Zoo, a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused or elderly animals. It was founded in 1906 and is the largest animal sheltering system in the state, as it also owns a shelter in Newark and Tinton Falls.

The Knights of Columbus was established as a fraternal benefit society with the purpose of financially assisting members and their families. Knights of Columbus aids the sick, disabled and needy.

The Lacey Elks are a part of the Elks nationwide fraternal order. The members of the lodge honor the principals of charity, justice, brotherly love and fidelity. The Elks offer scholarships, youth activities, veterans programs and opportunities for community investments.

Murray Grove Retreat and Conference Center is a private, non-profit organization that offers space for overnight and day gatherings. Murray Grove is a historic Unitarian Universalist center, and is located at the site where the first Universalist sermon was preached in the America's in 1770.

Lacey Rail-Trail Environmental Committee

Dedicated to watershed improvement, habitat protection, ecological stability and pedestrian safety issues in Ocean County.
