Harvey Cedars Cops: Car Theft Ring May Have Hit LBI

Theft of $100k luxury car linked to others

Police in Harvey Cedars are investigating the overnight theft of a luxury car that may be connected to similar thefts in Monmouth County.

A white, 2013 Mercedes-Benz S550 valued at over $100,000 was taken from a residence on Buckingham Avenue "late in the evening" Sunday night, Chief Thomas Preiser said in a statement Tuesday morning.

The vehicle was unlocked with the key fob left in it at the time it was stolen, Preiser said.

The department is currently reviewing surveillance video from the area but so far no other leads have developed.

"During the same evening, three other similar vehicles were stolen from towns in Monmouth County," said Preiser. "Police believe that a car theft ring came to the area looking for these types of vehicles."

Vehicles are often taken to Newark or New York City once they are stolen under such circumstances, the chief said.

"This type of activity was reported last summer," said Preiser. "Residents and visitors are urged to remove the keys from their vehicles and lock the car doors."

Sgt. Steve Frazee and Officer Anthony Abbatemarco are investigating.
