College sophomore explains why he is running for a seat on the Lacey Township school board

Editor's note: This letter was submitted by Louis Discenza

As a recent graduate (June 2012) of one of America’s Best High Schools OCVTS- MATES in Manahawkin, I fully understand the need for improved academic achievement at Lacey High School and the Lacey School District overall.

This year presents an interesting opportunity for Lacey voters to reshape the current school board. Nine people are running for 3 seats and I am one of them.

While attending MATES, I took 26 college credits and was awarded a full tuition scholarship to the Richard Stockton College in Pomona. I am now an accelerated sophomore, and in the fall of 2013, will be applying to graduate school in the field of computational science.

High SAT scores were the key to winning my full tuition scholarship.  Many Lacey High School seniors are falling short of the state averages and students must be higher than state average to win these college merit scholarships.

I welcome the opportunity to serve the people and students of Lacey by participating in policy and curriculum updates which are needed to bring Lacey High school out of the 257th position of 328 New Jersey state high schools. With a budget of $71 million dollars, the taxpayers deserve a better return on their investment.

Please remember to vote for me in November.

Respectfully submitted.
