Eating, Drinking and Cooking in South Jersey: Memorial Day Weekend

Slaughterfest! Greek food! Herbs! And much more this holiday weekend.

Memorial Day Weekend — the time for many of us to take the covers off our grills and get the burgers and dogs (and other things) cooking. We might just burn the first ones, though — and that’s OK. It’s spring training for the grilling season, so an error or two might happen. As long as you get back and keep working on the grilling fundamentals, you’ll be an Aal-star by July 4th.

If your interest is food but not so much on cooking it yourself, you have some options available to you this holiday weekend.

Quickly becoming a Memorial Day Weekend tradition, Michael Hauke of Tony Boloney’s has created a monster of a street fair in Atlantic City. Pizza Slaughterfest is part pizza-eating debauchery, part music festival, part local vendor showcase, and all fun. And it all starts at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Greek Festival at St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church in Vineland kicks off today and will run through the weekend. The admission is free, and the Greek pastries are wonderful.

Jersey strawberries are here and ready to be eaten! This weekend will be another Strawberry Festival at Johnson’s Corner Farm in Medford. Strawberries will also be front and center this Saturday at Sweet Life Bakery in Vineland for their annual Strawberry Festival.

Staying close to the ground, it’s the annual Herb Festival Weekend at Triple Oaks Nursery & Herb Garden in Franklinville this weekend. Check out the schedule for demonstrations.

Wine and BBQ…yes, please! For the wine, mixed with some live music, head to Natali Vineyard in Cape May Court House for their Wine & Blues Festival from 1 to 6 p.m. For the ‘cue, it’s a BBQ Restaurant Challenge at the Glassboro Marketplace from 1 to 4 p.m.
