Eating, Drinking and Cooking in South Jersey: Labor Day Weekend

Even on Labor Day weekend, there are foodie things going on!

We’ve come once again to Labor Day Weekend, meaning that another summer is heading off into a brilliant sunset. Hope everyone was able to enjoy themselves this summer, which was your typical sticky humid Jersey kind of summer. Usually, this weekend is a little thin on events and big on cookouts. The cookouts will still be going strong, but if you choose to do something else there are a number of foodie events for your liking.

You still have time to enjoy Wildwood Restaurant Week, which ends on Friday. It’s a four-course meal for only $30 a person.

Saturday has an interesting mix of things taking place. West Cape May will be holding it annual Tomato Festival at Wilbraham Park from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The admission is free, and they promise quirkiness. We like quirkiness. It will be a Labor Day Luau at Natali Vineyards in Cape May Court House from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday. Admission is also free, and wine tastings will be $5. The Atlantic City ballet is having a Beer for the Arts fundraiser at Sandi Pointe Coastal Bistro in Somers Point from 4 to 8 p.m. The cost is $45 per person and will feature many local brews in the Delaware Valley as well as Gary Monterosso.

Golden Nugget in Atlantic City is having a two-day Bubba Gump Shrimp Fest on the Deck from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. My guess is that there will be shrimp available.

And then on Sunday, you got two events that capture the mood of the weekend, Labor Day barbecues and the start of football season! The Southern Ocean Chamber of Commerce is throwing a Pig Skin Pig Roast Family Tail Gate at Doc Cramer Field in Manahawkin from 1 to 5 p.m.. Admission is $25 per person and only $10 for kids ages 12 and under. Meanwhile, over along the Delaware, it will be the annual Camden Waterfront Backyard BBQ at Wiggins Waterfront Park in Camden from 2PM to 10PM.

If you care to venture out of South Jersey this weekend…

You’re on your own. Enjoy your holiday weekend, and we’ll keep South Jersey here while you’re gone. I do hear that they’re throwing this kind of big music festival in Philly on Saturday.

Here’s your cooking class schedule for the weekend:

Saturday: Mexican Fiesta and Celebration Dinner Party at Viking Cooking School at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City.

Sunday: Southern Specialties from the hit movie “The Help” and Titanic Dinner Party at Viking Cooking School.

And as always, keep up on what food events and cooking classes are coming up on our website!

@proud-- I couldn't agree with you more. I found it quite ironic that she has a blog on Lacey PatchRead More on which she gives her profile, and it never once mentions her employment with Wall Township. Things that make ya go hmmmmmm.

It's WHAFIS, not WHALIS, and it MUST be incorporated in the overland wave propagation modeling. I'veRead More been telling you this for weeks @Spooner. I offered to discuss it, but you were caught up on some sand blaster theory. BFE's will certainly be affected. As a sidebar, the author of the link mentioned mixed up the mapping terms. We currently have effective maps or FIRM's which establish BFE. The maps (ABFE)that were released in December and adopted as the state building code (+ freeboard) are advisory (incomplete and wrong). Working maps are due out in a few weeks followed shortly thereafter by preliminary maps, which are the maps that can be appealed. Approximately 18 to 24 months after the release of the preliminary maps there will be new effective maps (new FIRM's) with new BFE 's. If the preliminary maps are not drastically different than the ABFE's, you can count on a mass of appeals, and quite likely, protracted litigations.

@Spooner, I have something that you may want to read. Go to the Borough of Mantoloking website. OnRead More the right hand side is a column entitled Post Sandy Information. Near the bottom is a tab called "uncategorized". Click on it and there is a letter used as the Boro response to ABFE. It is very telling and makes a lot of sense.

Congrats, Pat. You deserve this. Despite all you've been through, you kept it going with your job,Read More your writing, and all the "chronicles" that expressed the plight of the Sandy victims in a way that no one else could. That has been so appreciated.
