At Forked River Shop, We All Scream For Ice Cream

Cowabunga Ice Cream wins best of the Jersey Shore award

The Cowabunga Ice Cream Shop in Forked River has only been open for three years, but owners Ellen and Ed Schack are already creating a loud buzz.  The creamery was just voted Jersey Shore’s #1 Ice Cream by NJ.com, beating out six other contenders by over 140 votes.

“When people come in to have ice cream they are always happy,” says Ellen Schack. “It’s always a fun thing and that’s why we love it.”

The Schacks are local residents who longed for a local ice cream shop that was friendly and accessible.

“We wanted a place that you could walk to,” says Schack.

They were also looking for something more in the ice cream flavors they were creating. Schack has worked in ice cream since she was a teenager. So after many years of experimenting with the ingredients, the Shacks came up with some winning flavors.

They have been dubbed the world’s first designer ice cream shop for their original recipes and high-quality taste. Only small batches of hand-scooped ice cream are made in the store to create rich and creamy flavors such as almond joy, chocolate peanut butter, and red velvet yogurt.

Cowabunga Ice Cream even reaches beyond Forked River locals. They ship nationwide and have sold to customers in states as far as Washington and Texas.

They also have an ice cream boat out on the Tices Shoal.

“We just thought it would be so much fun to get hand scooped ice cream out on the water,” says Ed Schack.

“It is really rewarding to be able to touch the public,” says Ed Shack. “You will always get a warm and friendly greeting when you enter the store.  We want to cheer up everyone’s day.”
