UPDATE: Oyster Creek Semi-Annual Siren Test Slated For Tuesday

Don't be alarmed if the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station's sirens begin to blare on Tuesday morning.

Exelon Generation will conduct its semi-annual, full volume test of the new emergency warning sirens with battery back-up at approximately 10 a.m. The company performs two semi-annual tests on the first Tuesday in June and the first Tuesday in December each year, Exelon spokesperson Suzanne D'Ambrosio said.

Exelon Generation replaced all 42 emergency warning sirens in the 10-mile radius around Oyster Creek with new, state-of-the-art units featuring battery back-up. The original sirens were removed earlier this year. 

 The purpose of the sirens is to notify residents to tune to an Emergency Alert System (EAS) radio or television station in case of an emergency, she said. 

The Oyster Creek siren investment was part of Exelon Generation’s commitment to replace and upgrade the emergency sirens at all of the sites in the mid-Atlantic, including Limerick Generating Station, Three Mile Island Generating Station and Peach Bottom Atomic Power Station.  This project involved a total investment of more than $11 million and the replacement of 400 sirens.
