Holiday Rush Over for Forked River Post Office

Postmaster says Monday, Dec. 19 was one of the post office's busiest days

Today may be the last day to ship your gifts priority mail to arrive by Christmas but the season is already over for the U.S. Post Office, Forked River PostmasterWilliam Wherendt said.

“In our business, by Wednesday, the Christmas season is almost over,” he said.

On average, one out of four homes in Lacey got a package on Monday, totaling more than 2,000 deliveries.

For the , Monday’s revenue was three times higher than a normal day. But since then, it’s been like “night and day,” Wehrendt said.

“Monday was the biggest day I’ve seen in a long time,” he said.

Wehrendt believes the commercial, “If it fits, it ships,” has really paid off.

“A lot of people like that,” he said.

Since last week, parcels have been up 16 percent for the local post office.

He added that despite the economy and technology there’s still a need for the post office.

“If you order a sweater online, it has to come in a box. That sweater can’t be faxed,” Wehrendt said.

The next rush won’t be until tax day on April 15, he said. And unless you absolutely need to be at the post office the day after a holiday, avoid it because those tend to be busy days as well.

One anonymous resident commented that her experience at the post office went smooth as she was “in and out” while another recommended automated services to increase efficiency.

Thursday, Dec. 22 the United Parcel Service is still over UPS Next Day Air.

The post office and UPS are closed Saturday and Sunday for Christmas.
