Second Annual Run The Pines For Canines 5K Race Slated For Saturday

All proceeds from the dog-friendly event will go to the Popcorn Park Zoo, event organizer says

There's still time to sign up for the second annual "Run The Pines For Canines 5k" race coming up this Saturday around Bamber Lake.

Although the online registration has closed, runners can still register starting at 7:30 a.m. at the Popcorn Park Zoo at 1 Humane Way on Lacey Road, said Justin Rand, who organized the first event last year.

All proceeds from the race will be donated to Popcorn Park's "ResQ Fund, which provides emergency surgery or intensive medical care to animals that have been severely abused or neglected.

So far, 140 participants have signed up for Saturday's race, which will be held rain or shine. It gets underway at 9 a.m.

"That's the total we had last year," Rand said. "We're expecting somewhere in the neighborhood of 200 to 250."

The registration fee is $30. All participants are guaranteed a T-shirt, a entry bag and a free pass to Popcorn Park. Vendors will also be on hand, he said.

The route will begin at 9 a.m. at the entrance to the zoo on West Lacey Road, wind around Bamber Lake and finish back at the zoo entrance, Rand said.

Rand - a 2008 Lacey High School graduate who is now at student at the University of Pennsylvania Law School - began volunteering at Popcorn Park three years ago.

"I'm an animal lover," he said. "I do dog walking or cat socializing. The staff does a tremendous job to make the event possible."

Runners are welcome to bring their dogs along with them, Rand said.
