Rabid Raccoon Found In Barnegat Pines

Residents are encouraged to update their pet's rabies shots

Ocean County officials are warning Lacey Township pet owners to make sure their animals have up-to-date rabies shots after a rabid raccoon was found this week in Barnegat Pines.

The aggressive animal was captured after residents called police and taken to the state Health and Environmental Lab, where it was found to be rabid.

Jennifer Crawford, a communicable disease expert with the Ocean County Health Department, said it is important that cats and dogs have current rabies shots, whether they are kept outdoors or not. Even house pets can sometimes get out and come in contact with a rabid animal, he said.

Anyone who fears their pet has been exposed to the rabid raccoon can call the Health Department at (732) 341-9700, extension 7502.

Public Health Coordinator Daniel Regenye said 9 rabid animals have been found so far this year in the county. Five other raccoons, 2 skunks and a groundhog were rabid. They were found in Toms River, Lacey, Lakewood, Tuckerton, Jackson and Manchester.

“Any animal acting strange could have rabies,’’ said Freeholder Gerry P. Little, urging people to stay away from this animals and call police.

Free rabies shots are available nearly every Wednesday by appointment at the Health Department’s animal shelters in Jackson and Stafford townships. Call the number above or see the department’s Web site, www.ochd.org and the events calendar for information.
