Lacey Township Family Fun Walk Rescheduled

Event Helps to Bring Families Together for a Healthy, Fun Activity

The Lacey Township Municipal Alliance has rescheduled its Family Fun Walk for 10 a.m. Saturday, May 14 after inclement weather on April 23 forced the event’s postponement.

Alliance Coordinator Heather Scanlon said the group’s mission is to prevent substance abuse in the community and one way to do that is to provide programs that families can enjoy together.

“The Family Fun Walk is especially good for parents new in town or those with children not yet involved in community activities,” said Scanlon.  “The walk fosters a sense of community and aids in reducing risk factors for substance abuse.”

Scanlon said factors that can help keep kids from substance abuse include alternative activities such as dances, belonging to a community, and spending time with their family.

The walk will take place at Hebrew Park on South Street in Lanoka Harbor.  The original location was Gille Park, but that location was not available on the new date.

Walkers may walk once or twice around the park, with two laps equaling 1.5 miles.  One hundred people had pre-registered for the original date and many of those are expected to attend the May 14 walk.  To pre-register, call 609-693-1100, ext. 2217, however, same-day registration will be accepted.

After the walk, DJ Mike Klebacher will entertain the children with music and games.  There will be prizes and the first 75 people registered will get free pedometers.

The walk began several years ago as part of a larger prevention group called the Southern Ocean Council Against Substance Abuse and walks were held simultaneously in Lacey, Stafford, Barnegat/Ocean, Eagleswood and Long Beach Island to encourage family time together.  The Lacey Township Municipal Alliance has continued the walk so families can begin a healthy walking program.
