Lacey Library: 'This Place is for the Birds'

Valerie Hunter displays her bird houses

The Lacey Library could be home sweet home to tons of birds as one of the library displays features birdhouses.

Valerie Hunter of Waretown began collecting the birdhouses 11 years ago, when she moved into her home with her husband. Her stepdaughter gave her a sign that said, “This place is for the birds,” beginning her collection.

“I liked birds but I didn’t collect. It blossomed into a collection from there,” Hunter said.

The homeowners before Hunter had a bird theme throughout the house, which was another motivator.

Hunter’s collection consists of birdhouses, wind chimes, ceramic birds, clocks, plant sticks, and Christmas decorations.

She received many as gifts; others were passed down to her from friends.

Although the display only shows off about a dozen bird items, she has at least 20 others including figurines, ornaments, and stained glass.

Hunter laughed at the fact that birds do not settle down in her birdhouses in her yard. In fact, there is a Robin’s nest in a bush right outside her house.

“I enjoy my birds. I find them heartwarming and fun,” Hunter said.
