Hearing A 'Boom' Near Lacey And Barnegat? That's Mortar Fire (Training)

There will be Mortar Firing Training at Joint Base through Sunday until 11pm.

Expect loud "Booms" and ground shaking.

Residents near Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst may hear “booms” and feel “rumbles” all weekend, as a matter of fact.

The I and G Batteries of the 3rd Battalion, 14th Marine Regiment will be conducting mortar firing training Friday through Sunday, according to a military press release.

The activity is scheduled to end at 11 p.m. each day. “This training is essential and helps to ensure the readiness of America’s fighting force. As a result of these units performing their important training, residents may hear more noise than usual coming from the ranges and may experience possible ground shaking.

It is important to note that noise from the ranges may travel farther during overcast weather conditions,” the release states. The 42,000-acre installation spans more than 20 miles through portions of Burlington and Ocean counties.
