School Drug Testing Forum Planned for Tuesday

Students who park, participate in activities would be subject to testing

Lacey school officials will host a final public forum on a random drug testing program proposed for the township's schools on Tuesday.

Lacey is mapping out a plan to randomly drug test high school students who participate in extracurricular activities and those who hold a parking permit.

Similar policies exist in other local school districts, such as Brick Township.

Approximately $30,000 has been set aside in the 2013-14 budget for random drug testing, officials have said.

School officials, before this school year began, said they would plan additional meetings on the drug testing issue earlier in the year.

"The feedback that we get from the community helps us move forward, and we find that to be extremely valuable," acting Superintendent Vanessa Clark said days before the 2013-14 school year began.

The forum will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the auditorium of Lacey Township High School.
