Three Republicans and two Democrats have filed petitions for the 2013 primary election
Lacey’s Republican primary will be contested for the first time in several years as three Republicans and two Democrats have filed petitions to run for the two open seats ahead of this year’s township Committee races. Two seats on the Committee are open this year—those of Democrats Sean Sharkey and Helen DelaCruz. DelaCruz filed a petition to run to keep her seat while Sharkey announced in February that he would not be seeking a second term. Democrat Gary Vaccaro, who ran against current Mayor David Most in 2011, will once again vie for a seat, according to primary candidate filings provided by the township clerk's office. While the Democratic primary is not contested, the Republican primary is. Christopher Reid and Peter Curatolo, …

Committeewoman Helen DelaCruz was re-endorsed by the Democrats
White smoke may not have risen but the Republicans and Democrats of Lacey have selected candidates for the 2013 elections. Two seats on the Committee are open this year—those of Democrats Sean Sharkey and Helen DelaCruz. DelaCruz was re-endorsed by the Lacey Democrats while Sharkey announced in February that he would not be seeking re-election. Gary Vaccaro will once again vie for a seat on the Committee. Chris Reid and Peter Curatolo are backed by the Lacey Republicans in hopes to recapture the two seats that were lost to the Democrats in 2010. “I think both of them are going to be very good candidates,” Committeeman Gary Quinn said. “Both are very involved in the community.” Reid grew up in Lacey and is the township Public Defender, a …

Parties primary fields taking shape, with two governing body seats on the ballot this fall
Lacey can expect to see two Democrats on the 2013 ballot, despite Committeeman Sean Sharkey’s announcement that he will not be seeking a second term. “I’ll guarantee there will be two candidates,” said Barry Bendar, Democratic municipal chairman. “We will not allow a possible seat to remain empty in this situation.” Sharkey, a Democrat, announced in February that he would not be seeking a second term. The committeen is currently seeking permanent employment as a teacher. "It is not a decision that I came to lightly. After much thought, I have decided to focus my future in a different direction," Sharkey said in a letter. "In the remaining months of my term I will continue to fight hard for the people of this town as I have in the past two …
Sean Sharkey announced that he will not be seeking re-election
After three years on the Lacey Township Committee, Sean Sharkey announced that he will bid farewell come 2014. Sharkey, one of two Democrats on the Committee, announced in February that he would not be seeking a second term. Sharkey strives to become a full-time teacher, he said. Due to few teaching opportunities locally, he might seek employment elsewhere, including out of state. “I've also lived my whole life in this town, and it's great,” he said. “It's funny because growing up here we all wanted to get out as soon as possible, but when you finally grow up you realize that Lacey is a great place to live and maybe one day raise your own family. But it might be time for me to go see the rest of this big world of ours.” The announcement …

Gov. Chris Christie is the best person to lead New Jersey over the next four years, according to voters recently polled in a survey released this week by Quinnipiac University. Christie, a Republican, leads his Democratic rival, state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex), 62 percent to 25 percent in the state's 2013 gubernatorial race, according to the poll. The governor's overall approval rating also remains high. Christie's 74 percent approval rating and 69 percent favorable rating tie his personal record highs from January, the Huffington Post reports, both numbers buoyed by public perception of the way he handled Hurricane Sandy's impact and its aftermath. Christie appears to have strong support on the other side of the aisle, as well. …

Middlesex County state senator would challenge Gov. Chris Christie
The Ocean County Democratic organization has thrown its support behind state Sen. Barbara Buono for governor. The Middlesex County Democrat has announced she will challenge incumbent Republican Chris Christie in November. With word that Newark mayor Cory Booker, state Sen. Richard Codey and state Senate President Stephen Sweeney will not seek the state's highest office, Buono is widely considered to be the Democratic frontrunner in the June primary election. The Ocean County party organization made its decision to support Buono last weekend after she appeared at a county committee breakfast in Toms River. Christie has been a "disaster" for New Jersey, Ocean County Democratic Chairman Wyatt Earp said in a statement to Patch. "Under his …

Re-elected incumbents express thanks to constituents
Although distracted by the impact of Hurricane Sandy on the township, Lacey’s incumbents, who retained all contested seats, expressed thanks to their supporters following Election Day. “I’m very proud,” said Mayor Mark Dykoff. Dykoff and Committeeman Gary Quinn each earned three-year terms after fending off a challenge from Democratic newcomer Shawn Judson. Quinn picked up 7,783 votes or 39 percent while Dykoff received 7,568 votes or 38 percent of the votes. Judson got 4,389 votes or 22 percent. “It didn’t even feel like we had an election,” Dykoff said. Dykoff has been busy dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, he said. “That’s really our concern. I really haven’t had the time to think about (elections). I’m honored that the …

Voters in New Jersey on Tuesday cast their ballot for Barack Obama, giving him the state's 14 electoral votes.
Barack Obama won New Jersey’s 14 electoral votes on Tuesday, defeating Republican Mitt Romney. In the 2008 presidential election, the state voted for the Democratic candidate, and since the 1990s has voted for the overall winner of the presidential race 3 out of 5 times. Romney and Obama did not campaign aggressively in New Jersey. The state has typically been a Democratic stronghold in recent presidential elections.
