Unlocked Vehicles Targeted by Burglars
Police reported a rash of car burglaries on Windward Drive in Forked River and at the Georgetown Apartment complex
There were a rash of burglaries to unsecured motor vehicles throughout Lacey this past week, Lt. James Veltri said.
On Jan. 22 police responded to a number of burglaries on Windward Drive in Forked River.
A resident reported at 7:30 a.m. that two unlocked vehicles parked in the driveway were entered. Items were strewn about the car but nothing was stolen.
While in the area of Windward Drive and Sunrise Boulevard at 9 a.m., police found a purse containing personal belongings of a Windward resident. When police arrived at the home to return the purse, they discovered that an unlocked vehicle was entered. All personal belongings were returned to the resident.
At a third residence, an unlocked vehicle was entered and two flashlights valued at $60 and miscellaneous change was stolen.
Another unlocked vehicle was entered. Items were strewn about the car but nothing was taken.
On Jan. 22, police responded to the Georgetown Apartment Complex at 12:47 a.m. A witness reported that they heard a noise coming from the parking lot and saw a male entering vehicles.
While the police were responding to the incident, at 1 a.m. someone visiting the complex returned to an unlocked vehicle. The car had been rifled through and an Apple iPod touch, a FM transmitter and a wallet with cash and personal identification were stolen. The value of the stolen items was $323.
A second vehicle parked nearby was also unlocked and entered. Approximately $300 worth of Oakley sunglasses was stolen.
The suspect was described as a tall white male approximately 20 years old. He was wearing a grey jacket or sweatshirt, dark jeans and a dark hat.
On Jan. 13 a resident of Plumstead Court in Lanoka harbor reported that their unlocked vehicle was entered. Stolen was $325 worth of merchandise including sunglasses, multitools, and an iPod.
Police continue to investigate the car burglaries.

Sooo...the blame is of people who left their cars unlocked rather than the one who stole the items? What a world we live it. I don't recommend being naive and not locking your doors, but c'mon, don't berate the people leaving their doors unlocked...criticize the theif.

These incidents have been happening for years. If you choose to leave your car unlocked with hundreds of dollars of valuables in it knowing what's going on, I have no sympathy for you.

The common sense says dont leave ID or valuables in your car or leave it open with the keys in it either..

I think I would be too embarrassed to call the police, let alone tell anyone that I am to ignorant to lock my own car doors. The police even set up a mobile bill board telling citizens to lock their car doors, awhile back. These people should be charged a fee for wasting tax payer money for their ignorance.

I agree with Justin H...just because it's unlocked doesn't give the person that is the loser stealing the right to take the items. This town is just a mess, getting worst everyday. :(

Huh??????? If you need help to obtain food or other assistance there are appropriate ways to obtain them...its called social services. Ever hear of the food bank? Food stamps? NJ Family Care free health insurance is available to those who qualify!! Emergency housing assistance is available in certain situations as well as discounted rental assistance. The list goes on people. If you know someone who is in need...give them the tools to get help...don't tell them it's OK to STEAL other peoples belongings...GEESH!!!

I say let them even come on to your property , that way whatever happens to them after that is considered trespassing.I as a resident and a u.s. resident have the right to bear arms and defend my home and family. Many people have forgotten this through the years now with the economy be on guard now more than ever!!

I think you just need to use a little common sense.
Don't leave anything in your car a thief could steal, especially a wallet or a purse.
Locking your car door takes all of about 1 second.

doesnt matter if you lock it or not. just had my drivers side window smashed out on the 14th while it sat in the driveway. nothing was taken, because there was nothing left in the car to take. it would have been cheaper just to leave it unlocked.
