Report: New Jersey Among the Fittest States
The Garden State has one of the lowest adult obesity rates in the country, according to an annual study. But, the study sounded an ominous tone for the future
New Jersey's government spending may be out of control, but its waistline isn't. At least for now, anyway.
The Garden State is among the fittest places in America, according to an annual report released Tuesday.
New Jersey's adult obesity rate of 23.7 percent–on par with the national average–tied with the District of Columbia for 47th place in the study by the nonprofit Trust for America's Health and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
However, the report warned that if obesity rates continue on their current trajectories, by 2030, the obesity rate in New Jersey could reach 48.6 percent.
Mississippi's adult obesity rate of 34.9 percent is the highest in the country, according to the study.
The report contends that states could prevent obesity-related diseases and dramatically reduce health care costs if they reduced the average body mass index of their residents by just 5 percent by 2030.

Obesity is a problem in every state. To say one state is more fit than another is ridiculous. It depends on the individual....personal responsibility. And btw, eating healthy and exercising has nothing to do with economics.....I guarantee I can cook a healthy dinner for my family of four for eat cheaper than hitting the drive-thru.

there is a big difference in the shore area then north Jersey, I have to say as much as people walk more in North Jersey for some reason people tend to have a healthier lifestyle down here. & YES I can say that because I grew up in Morris Cnty for 26 yrs & have lived in Ocean Cnty for over 12+ there is a big difference in the lifestyle. Think that if the Government was really worried about people being healthy they would lower the prices of healthy food & increase the price of unhealthy food,
