Low-Cost Fall Bus Trips Planned for Lacey Seniors

Registration underway for popular recreation department-sponsored day trips

With costs for most everything going through the roof, the Lacey Township Recreation Department has scheduled a series of bus trips for senior citizens that don’t break the bank.

“We try to keep our trips affordable,” said James Wioland, township Recreation Director. “We have our own buses, so the price covers our expenses.”

The first set of trips is to the PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel for performances by the Xavier Cugat Orchestra on Wednesday, Sept. 7; Frankie Avalon on Tuesday, Sept. 13; and, Julie Budd on Tuesday, Sept. 20. For each date, the buses will leave from the Gille Park parking lot at 11 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch due to limited concessions. The cost per person is $6 per event.

The shows are part of the Garden State Arts Foundation Senior Concert Series and are presented free of charge for New Jersey's senior citizens and residents with special needs.

Two other trips that have been popular in the past are scheduled at this time.

Recreation will visit Cape May on Thursday, Sept. 29 for shopping, dining and sightseeing. The buses will leave the Gille Park parking lot at 8:45 a.m. Lunch will be on your own and the cost is $9 per person. On Thursday, Oct. 20, the buses will leave Gille Park parking lot at 8 a.m. for a day at the Columbus Market, a large flea market in Columbus, Burlington County. Lunch, again, will be on your own and the price per person is $6.

“Our seniors get the ability to spend the afternoon with friends, travel to destinations that might be hard to get to for them, with no parking and they’re not using gas,” said Wioland. “That’s the reason why people come back time and time again.”

Lacey Township residents can register for these programs at the Recreation Office, 818 W. Lacey Rd., Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Checks should be made payable to Lacey Township. For questions, please call (609) 693-1100 extension 2203.

“We have some people who register for every trip,” said Wioland. “We’re thinking of adding more trips, such as a winery tour, a movie day and a visit to the Princeton area. As long as people are interested, we’ll keep going.”
