Lacey United Methodist Church Still Open as Shelter
The church will be serving a Thanksgiving Day meal at 1 p.m.
Although the number of meals served at the Lacey United Methodist Church has been decreasing, the church still remains open as a shelter and will be serving a Thanksgiving Day meal at 1 p.m.
“We’re still open as long as we’re needed,” Pastor Linda Applegate said.
Currently seven families that were displaced due to Hurricane Sandy are staying at the church, she said.
“We’re focusing on the families staying here,” she said.
But the church continues to do outreach to those who need assistance and has teams working on homes. Last weekend, the church had teams from out of state. Volunteers are still welcomed.
Applegate also asks for local unemployed carpenters and contractors to give some time, she said. Many homes need professional help.
The church can also use volunteers for its Thanksgiving Day meal, which is opened to all. The meal is at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22.
The United Methodist Church is no longer accepting donations due to an overabundance and a lack of space. They are collecting gift cards and monetary donations though.
“As people get back into their homes, they’ll still need things,” she said.
People can call 609-693-5222 to notify the church of donations. The church has made a booklet listing donations so as the need arises, they can be collected.
Call 609-693-5222 to volunteer and for more information on the Thanksgiving Day meal.

Many of the churches throughout Lacey Township, including St. Pius, the Forked River Baptist Church and Village Lutheran, have helped after Hurricane Sandy. The Lacey United Methodist Church, in many cases, served as the point place with the other churches supporting their efforts. Some churches locally have closed down in the last week but continue to support those efforts of the Lacey United Methodist Church.
