Approximately 350 Lacey Township High School students received diplomas under a cloudy and rainy sky at the school district’s 31st annual commencement.

Superintendent Dr. Sandra Brower used Armando Perez, known by his stage name Pitbull and his hit Rain Over Me, to encourage the students to "achieve greatness against all odds" at her first Lacey Township High School Graduation. Despite a troubled childhood, Perez "achieved greatness against all odds" and now has 5,000,000 followers on Twitter, including Brower.

Brower then followed in the footsteps of former Superintendent Richard Starodub and told the graduating class that they are the "finest young men and women in Ocean County."

Principal William Zylinski, Board of Education President Jack Martenak, Class President Meagan Cronin, Salutatorian Kyle McGuire and Valedictorians Alexandra Granato and Garrett Waligroski also spoke.

Granato told the graduating class that the past is a part of their identities.

"Who we were here won't get lost. Who we were here won't be forgotten," she said.

"LTHS is a place where memories are made and a future made possible," Waligroski said. He added that success isn't everything while encouraging his fellow classmates to explore, dream and discover.

Graduates will be attending colleges such as American University, Boston University, the College of William and Mary, the Naval Academy Preparatory School, Pennsylvania State University, Rutgers University, the College of New Jersey, University of Delaware, University of Massachusetts and more.

Must be the school submitting these pictures because where the parents were and the rain pouring down along with the wind I know I was unable to get anything worth posting, and that was with a good good camera.

@ Elaine. I should have hired your professional. LOL. I'm a pretty good photographer but from where we all were sitting and the rain and wind, was impossible.

I would love to know why this event was not postponed until Thursday. Proud parents, grandparents and other guests endured cold, rain, thunder and more importantly lightning to watch our honored graduates go from beautiful young ladies and handsome young men to wet disheveled messes. Who ever made the decision to not postpone the graduation endangered everyone by exposing them to the likelihood of being struck by lightning. Sitting in an open field on metal folding chairs just doesn’t seem like the “educated” thing to do.

Too bad the weather made it impossible to get good pics or videos. You can get the DVD of the ceremony from the high school . . . . . . . should be offered at "cost" to all interested because of the decision not to go with raindate.

What a shame that it had to rain during the High School Graduation Ceremony. Of course, the Weather Report kept stating that clearning would take place.

Was a horrible night for a Graduation, pictures were impossible to get, my camera actually malfunctioned it got so wet. The only pictures I could get were from my cell phone after the ceremony. But they went on with Graduation, and congrats to the Class of 2012!!! I am very proud of my son Frankie :)

Good Morning and what a beautiful morning it is. What a nice day for graduation. Oh wait, that's right we had it last night in the rain instead of the alternate plan of if bad weather, graduation would take place TODAY, Thursday. I would also like to point out that Pitbull was not the best example to give for these kids to follow. There were many others that came from nothing and endured terrible terrible things and made a success of themselves. I think if a little more homework was done Dr. Brower could have thought of someone more worthy to speak about. As others have pointed out, he was a convicted two time DWI and admitted drug dealer. Of course we can always give him the keys to the city, as the mayor of Dallas gave Michael Vick. It is sad when talent such as sports and music takes precedence over hard work. I would have expected better from an educator then to have her make someone like Pitbull out to be a hero. It seems in our society if you can throw a football or rap a song it washes away the fact that they are convicted fellons.

I strongly agree with Elaine. These are the people in charge, the ones given the trust of our community to do and say the right thing. Our children were robbed of a very special night. I hope the lack of a rain date postponement was not due to the fact that the “Project Graduation” cruise around NYC (as I believe it was called) could not be rescheduled. Will the person responsible for making the wrong call stand up and voice your reasons here, please. You owe the 350+ students you disappointed last night at least that.

A a student who graduated, I walked in the rain, I was wet, and I was cold. But I still had a smile on my face despite the majority of crummy speeches, bad whether, and immature meet heads that graduated with me. I shook the had of an amazing educator as he handed me the key to my future. I'm glad it was raining because the ceremony was so touching that you couldn't tell the difference between the many raindrops, and the joyful tears streaming down my rosy cold check. I owe a lot to lths, and I'll be damned if I'd let a little bad weather effect my opinion on the school.

Rain or shine did not matter at all...What did matter was the fact that all the families gathered together were there to celebrate a milestone in their child's life. Life is full of rainshowers but it is still beautiful and it is all a matter of perspective. Enjoyed all speeches last night.

Marianne...What a wonderful perspective. I couldn't have said it better. I was just so proud of our son, Albert that it didn't matter what the weather was. We all enjoyed being together.

Rain or Shine the kids all had smiles and that is what it was about. It was not about the Parents or the Grandparents it was about the Graduating class. FYI My son was drier then any of his family sitting in the stands. They didn't care. Last I remember no one there is made of sugar and we didn't melt. It was all good :)

No, were not made of sugar and we didn't melt but I did get a fever and swollen glands and am now on antibiotics. I wonder how many others got sick.
The shame here is that it could have been avoided with a little prudence and erring on the side of caution.

I agree..it was impossible to get any real good pictures, and the rain and the umbrellas made it even more impossible! Both my boys endured graduation in the rain..we are all going to be sick! Also the Seniors entered the field way across from every one who was standing were they usually enter so we could get that first picture we all dream of, so I had to Haul it across the other side in heals and rain in mud and muck! Not the way i have pictured watching my son graduate from HS. It did not change the fact however that I am so proud of my sons both Nick and Chris..Oh well it will be remembered by all i am sure of that! Congratuations to all the class of 2012...Go now and take on the world, and make it a better place!

The Lacey Township Board of Ed owes every one of the 350 graduates an apology for ruining one of life's milestones with a self serving decision to hold graduation so that they didn"t have to show up today. The students had to turn out their pockets before graduation and were not permited to carry anything with them, same rule should have applied to all of the professionals who were able to be sheilded from the rain under umbrellas. It is a shame for all of the students that their accomplishment garnered so little respect from the school administration. I struggle to believe that there is no way to have an alternate plan, in the case that it gets too late to call it off, why not have it inside the building is big enough. I can only hope that the school board administration spends all summer long responding to each and every parent who writes in to register their dissatisfaction with the school board's decision. By no means does this take away from how proud every family is of their graduate, but those kids deserved far better treatment than they got.

Why are people on here so ignorant ? The weather could've been 85 and sunny and you people would find something to complain about. As far as the speech at pitbull the point that was trying to be made wasn't that you should all look up to drug dealers. It was that no matter what happens in your life you can still turn it around abd make something positive out of it.

@ Jose. I will still stand behind what I said, there were better examples then Pitbull. However, I will say that Dr. Brower and my husband had a conversation and she was very sincere in her conversation with him. I do disagree with your statement of people being ignorant. They were upset and with a right to be.

@Elaine, I've seen you're negative comments throughout the patch. it's a shame that you fail to see the positive in anything, and realize that the students are the important ones here. Sometimes, you're not dealt an ideal hand. It's how you as an individual handle that adversity and overcome and achieve despite that. Hopefully you can try to adopt an outlook that speaks more to the good in things than the bad.

@ Don, it's a shame you have nothing better to do then follow what I post. I guess you feel it's wrong to speak up against two worthless baseball coaches, that had many many complaints and FINALLY someone listened and at least one is gone which will give some kids a shot at fair play, that they've earned and didn't have handed to them based on who they know. And, I also guess you think it was wrong to be upset that one of the biggest events in a young adult and parents life (Graduation) was left to go on in the rain because these are the only negative comments I left. Worry about yourself and not so much about me.

I was just trying to give you some constructive advice. I don't actually follow your comments, I just see you posting a lot is all. You don't have to reassert your points, and it's not that I even disagree with what you say. It's the way you say it - very accusatory and blameful. Very rarely proposing viable solutions and it just seems, from my point of view, that you're a very negative person and thought that was a bit of a shame. But good luck to you and your family. The photos were very nice.

I agree with Don G. I see your negative/mean comments on the patch as well. Mostly on articles having to do with the school system though. You seem over-involved in my opinion. Especially with the baseball coaching situation - geez. It's a high school sport. If you're going to have such a negative tone, at least offer some type of idea to help or something. There are already enough people complaining.

Elaine your comments are very negative, it's true. Even your responses to others comments are not very light hearted. It is a shame that it rained during the ceremony. But to insinuate that there were seedy motives behind the decision is ignorant. The kids seemed to be fine and happy and that's really all that matters. Stop trying to drum up controversy where there is none. Be a little nicer too.

I don't particularly care who likes what I write. The school system needs to clean up their act! I wasn't the only one not happy with the baseball coaches, hence why one of them is gone and I wasn't the only one not happy with the graduation, hence why the big public appology. I won't lose any sleep over how anyone feels.

I don't think that's the point Elaine. The fact that you seem over-involved and negative is pretty obvious...hence your latest negative comment. It's funny that you don't see the pattern, but I guess that's part of the problem. There were plenty of folks who didn't have a problem with the coaching or the decision to hold graduation in unfair weather. If you have so many opinions and think so many things need to be addressed, by all means please provide possible solutions. Anyway, I suspect even if everything was the way you thought it should be, you would still find something to complain about.

Hey Derek. Isn't your sister in law the current athletic director at the high school? And, Maryann Blum, I'm sure you're related to someone there too. The name sounds very familiar. I see the pattern. I definately see the pattern. I have a right to be involved or overly involved as you say. My taxes help pay the salaries of those sitting in authority, including your sister in law who happenes to also be related to Biele the other baseball coach, and so it goes, who is related to who etc.. There may have been plenty of folks that didn't have a problem with the baseball coaching, but I guess there were more that did because someone listened and took care of the problem. I won't be responding anymore.

Ummmm....as you can probably imagine there is more than one DeGuitas family in the area. You certainly know how to spin things, I'll give you that. I guess the coaches got tired of people like you complaining and couldn't take anymore. So let's see the result next year. When the team doesn't live up to your expectations, we'll all look out for your wonderfully positive comments. You keep on doing what you're doing Elaine, good luck with all that. Hopefully at some point you'll come up with some solutions and be more productive rather than critical. Thanks for sparing everyone and not responding.
