Presidential candidate Mitt Romney won in Lacey Middle School’s mock election on Wednesday.
The Election Board of Ocean County lent the school two voting booths. Each student voted in the booth for president and U.S. Senate and on a paper ballot for the House of Representatives and the Lacey Committee.
Romney received 52 percent of the votes while President Barack Obama got 48 percent.
Locally, the students voted for Mayor Mark Dykoff and Committeeman Gary Quinn to keep their seats on the Lacey Township Committee. The full results are below.
Department Chair Paul Groben previously said that the results each year are “interesting.
“In the past, they’ve been remarkably accurate and almost in every case, opposite of the township,” he said.
One year, the student body came within one-tenth of the actual result, he said.
In 2008, the Presidential Mock Election results were as follows: 371 students or 53 percent of the student body voted for Barack Obama while 326 students or 47 percent voted for John McCain.
Obama won the 2008 race with 52.9 percent of the votes.

I guess middle-school aged kids is one of the only demographics he's going to win. Seems about right to me, especially considering how he's run his campaign. Why would kids from Lacey chose a minority over an upper-class white guy anyway...very telling.

Bert, this vote had 57 lesser votes cast than 2008 for the presidential ticket. One could discern that some voters in the Middle school were disenfranchised when they did not show a Voters/Student ID, or the turnout was indeed less due to the democrat on the ticket, as in, they stayed home on election day. All food for thought, possibly, their are less kids in this particular class ;)

Furthermore, the votes for town committee were in the 400's, that is a telling stat, Romney won based on lesser votes for President Ticket, this could be a small sample of the bigger picture as to the dynamics that may possibly play out in the end.

Considering that the president is up 5-10 points in most of the swing states and has a 20-30% chance of a landslide, both of you, and 335 little youngsters are going to be very disappointed.
Great "news" item, Patch. Oy.

Did not expect that - warms the cockles of my heart, if only because it shows that they see that the situation this Nation is in is untenable - "if the horse is dead - dismount." Kids hear what their parents are talking about, but most are not easily influenced - I would suspect that they see the economic realities at home, and realize that things aren't really "improving".
We support neither candidate as a party, but our individual members are free to vote their own conscience at the polls. No "Party Hand-Cuffs" here, as Davey Crockett referred to.
Good job, kids...now, start questioning the actions at town meetings, like spending $ 28,000 for a feasibility study on building a power plant...is the town planning on footing the bill for the plant, or did they just hand a campaign donor a bunch of your money to give back for yard signs?

This is rediculous. Let them be kids and play ball, ride bikes, and learn about nature, not get involved in political bs. It's middle school for God's sakes !

Bernie, I agree, but in this instance it is a chance for the students to learn about the voting process as a civics lesson. The thing is, it occurs every 4 years I assume, so not every student that transitions thru Middle school would have this particular chance to have this civics lesson, unless of course they have done this for lower governmental elections every year in which I'm not aware of.

Fredrick,
I'm not sure if you attended the meeting on Wednesday it if you did you must have realized it was money well spent. And just for the record the amount was $22,00

I didn't say that the meeting wasn't a benefit to the people of Lacey - What I did say is that Lacey won't be building their OWN power plant, so why was a check cut to a specific group to provide the study? What process was used with YOUR money to determine who would provide said study? Besides a campaign photo op, what did it really provide the people that merited public dollars to discuss a private enterprise issue? I don't think the analogy is too far off in saying that it was like having the Twp. fork over $$ for a scouting report for the Giants. As to the figure, I quoted the published amount.
Was there any discussion over the existing buried waste on the site? No. Why is there the false figure bandied about of 800,000,000.00 for a cooling tower? The Skyscraper occupied by Comcast in Philly cost 40% of that figure...a finished building. Any investigation being done into (my) proposed integration of ground-loop technology for environmentally safe cooling, rather than the glad-handing of huge engineering and construction subsidies for a new power plant?
If LACEY went off-line tomorrow, the lights in the surrounding towns would not go out - the GRID brings you your electricity - that's why NYC had a blackout when a transfer station in CANADA blew. What you would lose would be the jobs there, now. That is important, but raising a false flag as to the cost of up-fitting the plant is a spurious argument, at best.

I will be filing an OPRA request next week to determine costs and acquire a copy of said plan. Hope it's new work, and not cut-and-paste from the D.O.E. It should be an interesting read.

The mainstream media "polls" are skewed. They're oversampling democrats and undersampling independents. So pospatch get your head out of the clouds. As for instantly claiming these kids are racists that's the typical progressive tactic that reflects your ignorance. You may be on the government dole at some level but most are feeling the impact of the purposeful downsizing of the American economy at the hands of BHO and his handlers. If he does manage to come close enough in accurate polls he may pull it off through the usual corpse votes. As for Romney being a typical upper class white guy, how's that not racist. By the way the man gave up his inheritance and has donated 30% of his income to charity more than BHO has given in his life time. Take a look at BHO's background, he was far from "underpriviliged". When 95% percent of a race votes for a candidate of the same race what would you call that?? The standard race baiting tactic is getting old, very old.

Have a little faith - I found in my role as a scoutmaster that most kids find their parents' intolerance laughable, so I highly doubt that these kids would be greatly influenced by that - even at this young age. They are, however, bombarded by the media. The kids, themselves, seem far more tolerant today of social and racial differences - as it should be, and thank Heaven for it, for, one day, THEY will be the leaders. Want to make a real difference in the future? Teach your children their history, and insure they understand the legacy that is theirs.
