Whitney Houston Celebrated in Rousing Funeral Service
Jennifer Hudson, Stevie Wonder, Dionne Warwick, Oprah Winfrey, Kevin Costner, Gov. Christie, Mayor Booker all in attendance.
Newark's own, singer Whitney Houston, was welcomed home to the church where she began her singing career Saturday, in a rousing gospel-flavored funeral service before an audience of family, friends and celebrities.
"Whitney, today is your day," the Rev. Joe A. Carter, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, said in beginning the service.
A powerful choir of more than 100 singers, backed by a band that included drums and bass and horns, provided an emotional backdrop to a procession of singers, most of them from the world of gospel music.
Actor and filmmaker Tyler Perry spoke of what he termed the grace that carried Houston through her life. "There was a grace that carried her down through Miss Cissy Houston, a grace that brought her up through singing," Perry said. "There was a grace that kept on carrying all the way through."
Gospel singer Bebe Winans remembered an encounter with Houston as the two prepared to set out on a tour. He met Whitney in her closet, he said, which he described as being larger than the church. She told him she had bought uniforms for the band, a cream-colored suit for him and dresses for herself and other singers. "But this is not a material relatioship, Whitney," he said he protested. "She said, 'Ya'll broke, right?," Winans said, as the audience roared with laughter. "And I'm rich, right? So I can buy what I want to for yall, right?' And that is Whitney," Winans concluded.
Actor Kevin Costner, who co-starred with Houston in "The Bodyguard," remembered the surprising stories the two shared about growing up in the church, where his grandmother led the choir.
Alicia Keys remembered Houston's friendship, and how she had reached out to many younger singers.
The audience for the invitation-only service included a star-studded guest list including Costner, Warwick and Keys, as well as music world luminaries Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, Roberta Flack and Stevie Wonder. Newark Mayor Cory Booker and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie were also in attendance. Houston's godmother, Aretha Franklin, had to cancel her appearance because of health problems.
A motorcade escorting the Houston family arrived at the church shortly before noon.
Just after the gold hearse carrying Houston's body arrived at the Sussex Avenue church around 10 a.m., the Rev. Jesse Jackson emerged to a crush of media stationed on Nesbitt Street, calling the late singer one of the most talented performers of her time.
"She was just tremendous New Jersey talent," Jackson told local reporters. "She's in the gallery of greats in this state."
Houston, who was born in Newark and grew up in East Orange, became a local star singing in the youth gospel choir at New Hope Baptist Church, where mother Cissy Houston was a choirmaster.
Just after Houston's casket arrived, a procession of vehicles made its way down Dey Street to a parking lot located directly across the Sussex Avenue side of the church. A few dozen mourners then began filing into New Hope as SWAT Team officers stationed on a rooftop across the church looked on.
Georgetown University professor and author Michael Eric Dyson, who had just come from Whigham Funeral Home, where Houston's body has been kept since it arrived late Monday night, said the ceremony was "not a concert."
"This is a dignified celebration of her life, which means it has to have a certain decorum," he said.
Fans, some as far away as North Carolina, began amassing behind police barricades in the blocks surrounding Houston's childhood church holding t-shirts and posters memorializing the singer. Most were disappointed that they weren't allowed near the church, which was closed off by a radius of several blocks in each direction.
"I wished fans could get closer," said Bebe Reid, a 10-year resident of Newark. "She was an unparalleled artist. I pray she's in peace. In spite of her problems, she was a gift."
As dawn broke Saturday over Newark, gleaming light poured over New Hope Baptist, where a few fans spent the final minutes before police closed off the block tucking mementoes, balloons and pictures into the church's wrought iron fence.
Flower arrangements dotted a lower floor inside the church where Houston first sang in the youth gospel choir decades ago. A heart-shaped arrangement of white roses were signed by Franklin, Houston's godmother, while an elaborate piece spelled out "Greatest Love of All," one of Houston's hit songs, in red roses. Beyonce's mother, Tina Knowles, had sent over a leafy bouquet, and Grambling University, the historically black college, sent an arrangement as well.

Janice we can see the veins in your neck have vanished and you will too! Before you all write and speak about Whitney Houston.....Do Yourself a Favor.....go and read what she did for Newark, in particular a hospital for children! See what she did in particular for a school too! Tone it all done and before you write all your BS, get your facts straight. It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool then to speak and remove all doubt. Whitney Houston had many talents that exceeded her faults, so lets celebrate her life rather than bashing her! All of you, if you had half of a brain, you should pull out your checkbook and do what she did. And until that time.....Shut your mouths and find a better use for your fingers. Donate your time for a worthy cause as you do not have the money to do so. Janice, you are an ignorant person.

Sadly, there are lots of people who die the same way that she did. New Jersey does not lower the flag for them. She wasted her great ability and left a devasted daughter, mother and friends. She does not deserve the honor Chrisite is giving her. But he is not honoring her, he is cultivating votes.

Ultimately Hollywood couldn’t wish for a more thrilling goodbye and resurrection, anointed and redeemed by a stellar support Hollywood cast who have rushed to lend their name to Whitney’s pathos and of course vice versa. The tears that will stream down our collective cheeks will be an ode not so much to the troubled diva Whitney but more to the disenfranchised image of what fallen heroes have come to mean to us and how perhaps one day we will have to move on and attempt to become our own hero and let Whitney and her demons rest and to silently wonder to ourselves if one day we can dies for our sins….

Will Christie attend the funeral on Tuesday of the North Arlington NJ United States Marine that was killed in Afghanistan? He's turned out to be the lowest form of life, a self important pandering politician. Won't vote for him again. Let the dems take over the state house again. A republican governor can't "fix" what's wrong with NJ anyway, not with a democrat controlled legislature. Let NJ continue the spiral to bankruptcy as more "producers" exit NJ and leave it to the "takers". Eventually the $$$ will run out and the pensions & benefits won't be sustained. This state is a corrupt cesspool with mind numbed unions & special interest groups that continue to elect corrupt representative in exchange for promises that taxpayers cannot fund. Done with Christie. RIP US Marine.

Do some research on Obama. Not what you see on TV, not what you hear on the "news" snipits on the radio, not what you read in the "news"paper. Another term with him and our country is finished. We need a Commander in Chief that is worthy of our Heroes. While they are losing their lives battling for our freedom our country is be dismantled from within. Believe or don't but if that man is re-elected those that are duped by him again will suffer along with the rest of us and our children & grandchildren will pay dearly. D's & R's must get past party and know that candidates through their own research not the bias media filter. I could care less if a politician is a loud mouth bully as long as he/she does what is right for the people they REPRESENT. What he did by attending this funeral for 3 hours in your face pandering to a certain voting block it wasn't doing what is right. Until people stand up and stop breaking Americans down into groups and hyphenated Americans nothing will change. Divide & conquer is exactly what the current occupant of the WH is doing. Pitting one group agains another.
What is right is attending the funeral of EVERY US soldier that is killed in the battle for freedom. Our military men and women are used by low life politicians and their wives for political gain. Disgusting. NJ is a lost cause give it up to the socialist dems and exit.

Who she was when she died is between her and God. She had many famous friends and lots of money so I'm sure her family paid above and beyond because they loved her. I hope your head stones don't have to reflect who you are, because the memory of you should do the job. My head stone will read, "led a life under construction, died a completed work". what is actually sadder than her death is the amount of those on this thread who spew hatred and a belief they know everything. @ steve dumbasski her daughter has always been with her and was with her in los angeles and on the day she died . all those on here who bash her are just jealous they could never reach that level of success so they crap on the memory of a woman while her body is still in the church going through the funeral ceremony. in a perfect world that should happen to all of you while you or a member of your family has passed and others can make ignorant statements about you or yours. she was beyond talented but flawed unlike all you perfect people. helen of course blames obama as usual . where were all of you bitching last year when clarence clemmons who had drug issues and infidelity had the flag lowered for him?here was an artist who actually won an emmy for her appearence on the grammys . which means she received an award for just how good she received an award. the rest of you could never dream of that height of talent so instead you spend all day on an online blog writing cruel stuff instead. most of you are the same rubes who have elvis posters all over your house and if you think the way he went out was dignified i think youre as much of hypocrites as you sound. and yes christie is the worst thing that ever happened to nj . flag lowering should be for military also but her family didnt ask him to do it

I simply think (even though it will never happen) that people should readjust how success is measured and who should be looked up as role models. Success shouldn't be measured by how much fame or money they have...but who they are and how they live their lives. Having tons of fame and money and all that stuff, but live a rough or bad lifestyle and or die at a young age is by no means a success when if they were average people could have live longer, healthier, lives.

If Governor Christie had any brains he would've honored Whitney Houston the way I did. In my PJ's, full belly, bottle of ginger ale and watching the movie Bodyguard. As for the flag....Wrong decision on his part. At least Ocean County and Toms River refused to lower the flag which the request from the governors office was so poorly written that most towns and counties though it was a demand from the governor. SNEAKY Chris!!!!!

It is an executive order. There is no way to enforce it.

Plus I hear Whitney donated all her proceeds she made from her star spangled banner song to the hero's and children of the war of 91... SO yes I think she deserves the flag half mast. She supported our troops by singing that , she even said it herself. Christie has made a good choice and im behind him 100 %.

I'm 100% against his decision. NO actor/singer or celebrity deserves the honor of having the flag flown at half staff no matter what they donated. They're no different then you or I and I don't expect the fly flown at half staff for you or I. Simple as that!

I agree with you Tom D. My Dad, who was a WWII vet...MIA and POW, thought she had a beautiful voice and bought tears to his eyes during the singing of the anthem, would of been happy Christie made the decision with the flag. She had donated monies to various charities. She was a big hearted person. Stop already people. It's over and done with...get on with your lives!

Any chance the comment sections can be closed on the Whitney Houston articles. Her funeral was two days ago and Cinnaminson has a lot more pertinent issues than Miss Houston's funeral that should be addressed on Patch. Thank you.

As everyone knows, many celebrities are very popular and wealthy. For that reasons, many politician seek their endorsements and financial contributions. It is doubtful Gov. Christy is immune from that reality. Reportedly, the governor will also be attending the funeral of North Arlington’s fallen Marine Lance Corporal Osbrany Montes De Oca. The Govenor’s executive order to fly flags at half-staff for Ms. Houston also included the fallen NJ Marine.
Throughout the history of this great nation, there have been celebrities who (outside of their fame as actors, entertainers, sports figures, etc.), have earned the status of heroes for their commitment to their this great nation. Bob Hope, Audie Murphy, Sen. Fred Thompson, Actress Marlene Dietrich, Pat Tillman are but a few of such notable celebrities.
Perhaps, the controversy over placing the N.J. State flags at half staff for Ms. Houston stems from what many see as the misapplication of ‘hero status’ to too many people who are just famous entertainers, in one field or another.
There are many ways in which to honor people who make contributions to society. However, certain honors should be reserved solely for those who have dedicated or given their lives for the greater good. Dedication and sacrifice should define hero's, not monetary contributions.

Forget the celebrities and politicians. Her old Gospel songs were some of the most awe-inspiring, heartfelt music I've ever heard, and I'm not religious.
