UPDATE: Three Lakewood Women Seriously Injured In Route 9 Accident In Bayville
Women were struck by a pickup truck near the New Jersey Transit bus stop; Route 9 reopened
Three Lakewood women were seriously injured Fright night after they were struck by a pickup truck while attempting to cross Route 9 at Frederick Drive, Sgt. Philip Smith said.
Although Route 9 was closed for almost two hours after the accident, it is now open both northbound and southbound, police said.
The women - all from Morris Boulevard in Lakewood - had just been dropped off by a southbound New Jersey Transit bus at the bus stop near Frederick Drive when the accident occurred.
A three-year-old girl one of the women was holding was not injured seriously and suffered only minor abrasions, Smith said.
The driver, Thomas Caranno, 70, Bayville, was driving his 1998 pickup truck southbound when the truck struck the women, he said.
It does not appear that alcohol or excessive speed were a factor in the accident, Smith said.
Police were hampered by a language barrier in attempting to communicate with the three women, who are all Hispanic, he said.
All three women were airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Their conditions were unavailable tonight.
"We just helicoptered the last patient out," Police Chief Karin T. DiMichele said earlier this evening. "It's going to be a little while to sort everything out."
Route 9 northbound is closed at Moorage Avenue and southbound at the entrance to the Berkeley Plaza.
The accident is under investigation by Berkeley Police Officers Tammy Clermont and Rip Bondulich and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, Smith said.
Come back to Berkeley Patch later for more information on this developing story.

It seems like there is a black cloud over this town lately. I hope all involved will be ok.I know I've driven there many times and had people run out thinking they can make it. It is hard to see them at times and its a busy area so your attention is on so much. You have to be a very attentive driver.I wish they had a safe way to cross there but I don't think they to. Through the years there have been numerous accidents there.

That stretch of RT 9 needs a serious makeover, its a mess whether driving or a pedestrian. The pedestrians have no chance in crossing that road, most drivers do not follow the law and yield to them, except at the 2 lights that are not at the area most cross. Perhaps another light at the intersection of 9 and Frederick Drive where the bus stops are.

NJMom61 - thank you. No one knows what the facts are as far as the driver is concerned. I'm sure he is undergoing extreme heartache at this time over what happened. It may not be his fault at all.

Make sure you get the facts..Probably were all wearing dark clothes, poor lighting, made a bad choice instead of waiting traffic to clear before crossing probably the bus blocked line of sight,,,,Hope all recovers (PS who paid for the 3 airlifts , we did)

Jersey Joe, how to you know they did not just walk in front of the driver? Why blame the driver right away. Did they cross at the crosswalk or did they cross wherever they felt like? They probably disobeyed the traffic laws by walking in front of the driver. Just like they broke the law by coming into this country illegally

whoever approved all those commercial buildings, needed to take a 2nd and 3rd look at the traffic flow there. It was bad before, now it's impossible. 2 lanes going into 1 with people going immediately left or right and a bus stop? just crazy.

Maybe they can just move the bus stop while studies or potential traffic light is in place. There should be safe crossings, in Old Bridge they put a fence so people getting off buses especially during rush hour cross properly & drivers are aware of the noted crossings.

Nicole
9:26 am on Monday, March 26, 2012
Because if they weren't here ILLEGALLY then this wouldn't have happened. Now the poor man who hit them has to suffer and so do the tax payers because now we have to foot their damn medical bills.

Nicole, you knew they were here illegally? Why didn't you report them and have them deported if so?
Nicole
10:27 am on Monday, March 26, 2012
The fact that not one of them spoke any English pretty much sums up the fact that they're here illegally. They couldn't even produce identification. I know damn well that I never leave house without my ID, most women I know don't. Especially when traveling with young children. And believe me, if I knew of anyone living by me that was here illegally I would report them. Not that it would do much good because our country works too hard trying to do more for the people who DRAIN our resources rather than help the people whose taxes FUND those resources.

I can complain about the construction. Take a drive down Rt.9 north of 70. The density of beige colored townhouses with minivans outside is insane. I can not think of anywhere that I have visited in the world that has allowed development to take place in such a dense matter.

Bad things happen to good people every day. You can do studies, have committees, hold meetings, change locations of traffic signals but at the end of the day. Someone is still gonna get hurt. we can't simply legislate it away.

The cops should speak Spanish then there would've been no problem, we need to accommodate these illegals anyway we can. Make all street signs in Spanish, everyone who works in public service should be required to be bilingual, they should get free housing, hospitalization, and food along with anything else they need to be comfortable here, we also need to open our borders so the rest of their families can come here too, and meanwhile us hardworking, tax paying Americans should pay for it. And if you don't agree your racist.

If you were picked up illegally for being in MEXICO you would be subject to spending 2 years in one of their jails. In the USA the illegals get all the benefits of citizens and get to use our laws against us. Disagree...just look at what the president's AG has done...taken the side of a foreign country against our own citizens...a disgrace!

When it comes to the people involved, it's no surprise they had no ID and were from Lakewood. Probably illegal aliens with anchor babies in tow. I see their disregard for traffic safety all the time, often running in front of cars and riding bikes on the wrong side of the road wearing all black with no reflectors. These people are reckless, and the sanctuary policy in Lakewood is now starting to bring much of Ocean County down. Been around Brick Township lately? Hard to believe this was once one of the safest communities in the US, now I see MS-13 gang grafitti popping up, strange men hanging around, and lots of beat up cars with out of state plates. Something needs to be done about Lakewood. If I was the Gov. I'd tell them they better get rid of the illegals or they get no state funding...

Well, see Chris... within the last couple of decades or so, this notion of America being a Private Country Club for White, Christian Men who can then decide to change the membership criteria to exclude everyone outside their narrow (minded) circle of "acceptable folks" has been taking root and growing wildly.
Now everyone who speaks anything other than English, anyone with an accent, anyone with a "foreign" sounding last name, anyone who isn't pale skinned, fine-featured Aryan looking, everyone who might for any reason cling to their ethnic heritage's customs, clothing or traditions while trying to live here in "Ahmerka" MUST be an illegal.
